Model Behavior

Standard

The 34th Annual Fashion Show at Genesee Community College is called “Fata Morgana”. For my part in the fashion show, I am working back of the house, as well as modeling in Ami Cornell and Kylie Dunn’s scene titled “Festival Haze”. As part of my back stage duties, I am responsible for helping dress the models and memorizing the order of the scenes, as well as cleaning up the back stage and dressing room area and keeping everyone back stage silent during the show. As for my role as a model, I will be featured in the scene “Festival Haze”, which was inspired by summer festivals, such as “Coachella”. I am extremely excited to not only have been asked to model but to also have the opportunity to participate both behind the scenes and on stage. I am excited to get to see all of the different viewpoints of the show, on the stage and off.

I feel that this is a very important experience that I can use, as I pursue a career in fashion. This experience will be something that I can use on my resume and gives me insight on different aspects of the fashion world. I have modeled previously for still photography, and now I have the opportunity to gain experience in backstage production and what is involved, as well as being a model on the runway. I hope that with this experience I will become more confident and use what I will learn in the future to come.

Bare

Standard

Its that time of year again! That’s right, the GCC 34th annual fashion show is right around the corner. I had the privilege of interning, and modeling for Alaina Shannon in her scene “Americana” in the 2014 GCC fashion show, Ethereal. I was able to get a taste of what it takes to participate in a fashion show. This year I am able to showcase my own fashion design skills. My scene is called “Bare by Jocelyn Eade”. Myself and my scene coordinator, Eunice GoEun Park, are excited to show what we’ve been working so hard on this year. I am grateful to have the opportunity to experience what it takes to produce a scene in a fashion show.

My main inspiration were colors we see in nature; the color palette is lavender, beige, black, and white. I grew up in the small town of Olean, New York which is just south of GCC. Growing up surrounded by nature has inspired me to put that into my clothing. For the Lavender pieces I was inspired by lavender fields, I love how peaceful they look. The beige pieces reminded me of fur, very soft and effortless. My black pieces were influenced by storms, a very sultry look. For my last color white, I was inspired by clouds. I want the audience to feel the inspiration when they see my clothes on the runway. Whether it’s the peaceful lavender, or light and airy clouds I want them to feel like they’re with nature. I’m looking forward to showcasing my designs in GCC’s fashion show “Fata Morgana” and to experience what it is like to be a designer in the fashion industry.

T.LaShaé

untitled (27 of 50)Tiffany Hill: outgoing, talented, strong, and beautiful are all words that have been commonly used to describe me as I was growing up, until now. As a child I had two dreams, the first was to
become a first grade teacher and the second was to be a fashion designer in New York. Unfortunately as a child I had already defeated myself because I decided to strive to become a teacher, constantly telling myself that becoming a designer
would be competitive and too difficult. As I got older, there was just something about fashion that I could not stay away from. Every time someone would see me they would ask, “Are you a model?” or they would tell me, “You need to be in fashion school”. Hearing people say these things made me dig deeper into finding out what was my actual dream and purpose. Now, as a proud student at GCC I can definitely say that I am following my dream and purpose as an upcoming designer working towards producing my own clothing line.

With this dream I have many visions, my clothing line being one. My logo was recently designed by someone who is like a family member to me, Justin Smith. He designed a logo that best fits me. The T stands for Tiffany and LaShaé is my middle name. T.LaShaé to me is classy, sophisticated and represents high fashion.

In this year’s Spring 2015 fashion show, I have the honor of bringing my scene to life on the runway. The name of my scene is Minuit Désert, which is in French, translating to midnight desert. I have such an amazing team that I am working with. My Co-Producer is Chiho Nakayama, my intern is Shantina Brewer, hair will be styled by Cosmetologist Mary Valenti, make-up will be by Professional MUA Monti Mccoy, and my Dressers are Hailey Rizzo and Matthew Wagner. Lastly, I am very thankful to be working with a jewelry company, Na’kaylas Jewelry Box, which is helping bring our vision to life with the beautiful pieces that will be incorporated within our scene. Minuit Désert by T.LaShaé is bringing life and something different to the runway, we cannot wait to see you all at the fashion show!

  • Create a children’s festival that celebrates and educates through the Arts. Offering hands-on art projects, some collaborative, that bring together children of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Commission and fund public art, tree plantings, and other beautification projects.
  • Highlight the richness of the Elmwood Village stores, restaurants, and people.

Why Go?: Vendors, tattoos, food, and drinks is what this festival is all about! Over a mile of homemade crafts, local tattoo artists, food, and drinks for every one to enjoy! While you get to visit over 1,000 of local vendors you can experience all the beauty and individuality that Buffalo has to offer!

5 Things I’m Excited About for Spring 2015 at GCC

Standard

Last semester I made a list of 10 Things I was excited about for the semester so I thought I would revisit my list and improve it for Spring 2015. Last semester was my last full-time semester so I suppose it’s only appropriate that, as I transition into part-time study at GCC, my list is shorter than the last one. Enjoy!

5. One. More. Class.

400_F_47125909_X2LDGA4m4GKtUcI6R6NnCyPrTLdHQwznI have to say, I’m a little frustrated with fumbling the ball last semester with Managerial Accounting but now that this class will be my main academic focus, I have a renewed confidence that I can get through this last painful class. My degree depends on this last class and I cannot wait to finish.

4. Sledding Down That Hill

These awesome people know how to have fun in the snow.

These awesome people know how to have fun in the snow.

I’m not sure if my College Village friends will appreciate this as much as I do. They, unfortunately, have to suffer while they walk up and down the hill with rain, sleet and snow whipping in their faces. Most days I say a silent prayer for them. However, I can’t wait for the next big snowfall to arrive at GCC Batavia Campus so I can go sledding down that hill. I wonder if anyone will join in the fun with me…

3. Actual Spring.

1527083_10152897850578103_4748297676987475065_nIt seems kind of funny that the spring semester starts in the middle of January. I think a little part of me dies inside when I udder the phrase “spring semester” during the dead of winter because I honestly can’t stand the snow and cold past the Christmas holiday and/or my one and only sledding day of the year. I sometimes find myself fantasizing about driving in the nice warm days of spring rather than the snow drift war zone that I have to endure on my way to GCC. It helps but then I have to get out of the car and walk/run into campus and my happy little fantasy is gone.

2. The Annual GCC Fashion Show

Last year's Fashion Show theme was "Ethereal"

Last year’s Fashion Show theme was “Ethereal”

The annual GCC Fashion Show is always something to look forward to. We have an unbelievable amount of talented fashion students here at GCC. I cannot wait to see what these student have in store for the show. Another great aspect to the Fashion Show is the Fashion Show Reception that the Tourism and Hospitality students plan and execute on their own take of the theme that the fashion students have chosen for the show. The theme will be announced soon so stay tuned!

1. GRADUATION!!

I can't wait to be in that line!

I can’t wait to be in that line!

Although I dropped the ball last semester and I have to retake Managerial Accounting, I am slightly glad that I did. If everything went according to plan then I was not going to participate in Commencement in May after finishing courses in December. Now that I’m going to be making the trek to Batavia once a week, I figured that I may as well participate in the Commencement ceremonies and graduate with the wonderful group of friends that I have made while attending GCC.

Semester is over-Thank You Professor David Johnson!!!!

Standard

Check it out! Bio 104 is fun!! Why not register for this class next semester?

cvmckay7's avatarcvmckay7

Well, just like the title says, the semester is over but that’s not the end of Science for me!!  Nope, Chemistry next semester, then Human Biology the semester after that.  So this is not going to be the end of my blogging experience, I’m sure.

The blogs I wrote were done because I had to do them for extra credit, but to tell you the truth, I enjoyed doing the research to be able to blog.  The really cool thing about most of the things I researched and wrote about were something we had just covered in my Biology 104 class with Professor/Dr. David Johnson, within a week or two.  Professor Johnson, by the way, is a very good professor.  Even though he was new to Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY this year, he was not new to teaching what he loves; ten years I believe he told us. …

New Spanish Class for Health Professionals to be Offered in the Spring

Standard

A basic class of medical vocabulary in Spanish will be brought to the school next semester. SPA 111, Introduction to Spanish for Health Professionals started and taught by Mrs. Kimber this is planned to begin in the Spring 2015 semester.

This program is designed to aid those entering into a medical field that will be in contact with Spanish speakers, that are becoming more common with the rise of the Spanish-speaking population. Mrs. Kimber stated “ The Spanish-speaking population of Western New York is growing.” However, since there are Vet Tech students at this school, there will be a focus on animal anatomy as well but is not the main goal of the course.

This course will be an elective aimed at the medical field here at the college. This course can be used to supplement a degree in Spanish translation, or a medical field equally. As an elective, this course does not require previous Spanish language experience.

The class is intended to run like an introductory Spanish class, focused on class work rather than online assignments. Class would be more focused on pronunciation rather than on conjugations and grammar; in due part to the human element of dealing with other Spanish speakers. The class itself will be split between room C303 and the foreign language lab in class hours. “After taking this course will you be a proficient Spanish speaker? No, but you will be able to give basic commands.” Mrs. Kimber states.

This offers a new opportunity to GCC students, as a fusion between classes, that provides the chance for students to gain people skills they might need to survive in their chosen field. When asked why Mrs. Kimber created this course she replied with, “ The best part of a foreign language is allowing people to advocate for themselves.” The course could be recommended to any would like an extra edge in their nursing career, or who want more capable public speaking skills. Mrs. Kimber states “ If it goes well, then there will be a second level.”

World Kindness Day at GCC

Standard

64367_10152876277993103_7104776448007432459_nWorld Kindness Day was November 13th and the GCC RAKtivists were out in full force to celebrate. The event provided holiday cards for students to sign and send out to troops that are deployed. Cathy Costello was able to deliver the holiday cards to the local American Leigion. Students were encouraged to spin the “Wheel of Kindness” where they were given a good deed to complete.

Many people flocked to the event because Genesee County Animal Shelter brought 2 adoptable dogs and one adoptable cat. The RAKtivists were able to raise about $288 for the Genesee and Orleans County animal shelters and faculty and students donated around 175lbs of dog and cat food. The RAKtivists sold roses until about 2PM, afterwards Abby Wilcox and Cathrine Kelkenberg took the leftover roses and placed them on random cars. They hoped to brighten people’s day on a very cold and rainy/snowy day.

10734264_10152876283543103_2419562408594155853_nThe RAKtivists will be gearing up for the second annual Random Acts of Kindness Week that will take place in February. If you would like to participate in the Random Acts of Kindness Week as a member of the RAKtivists, then like their Facebook page to see when the next meetings are or contact the GCC RAKtivists’ advisor, Lauren Paisley.

Volunteering for an Underground Fashion Show

Standard

There are not many words to describe this feeling but one that comes to mind is magical.Rochester fashion week was simply breath-taking. My fashion show was the Saturday night show on October 17th. As I walked in the underground setting, (YES the fashion show was underground) I thought to myself wow this is beautiful and then i think wow this will be a lot to clean up. The huge projector screens and the super long runway let me know right then and there that the night would be a night to remember.

As a fashion business student I try to look for every opportunity that has anything to do with the fashion industry. So naturally I volunteered of the underground fashion show. The show was held in a closed off part of the Xerox parking garage located in Rochester NY. Upon my arrival I was given a volunteer lanyard and was asked to organize the gift bags on the chairs. After I organized the gift bags I was assigned to work the entrance and take the stubs of people’s tickets at the door. I did this until around 30 minutes into the show. There seemed to be an endless line of people just standing so eager to be let in. I was so excited for them because I knew they were in for a treat.

The show started at 8 pm but the doors opened at 7 once everyone was inside I was relieved of my duties until cleanup time. I walked down the entrance down the stairs to see the actual show. I was amazed by a model with flaming red hair strut down the runway wearing a black lace dress. It was relentlessly fierce. I saw so many different collections; one that seemed to be inspired by common French designs, an earthy looking collection, hipster looks, and more. The show itself had at least 1000 people there it was packed and people were kind of tipsy. It was amusing to watch them having a great time singing and dancing. The show lasted an hour and then it was clean up time. This took the longest amount of time. I had to clean up spilled cocktails and broken glasses until about 11pm but it all led to laughs and it was so much fun. I can wait to help again next year.
