Introducing Myself

Standard

Hi, my name is Donald Lockwood and I am a student here at GCC and am doing an internship with the Marketing & Communications Office (MarCom). I am going to GCC for Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and Social Media. I am a sophomore and am working on my fourth semester.

I am a photographer and am also in the Photography Club where I am the secretary. I help with the Instagram account for the club. If you would like to follow, our Instagram is @gcc_photoclub. The professor that I have that advises the photography club, Joseph Ziolkowski, or Joe Z. as everyone calls him, is having a show at GCC right now in the Rosalie “Roz” Steiner Art Gallery and I will be doing a blog on his exhibit hopefully next week. I love to take photos of nature and the outdoors. One of my favorite places to take nature photos is at Letchworth State Park in Wyoming County. I grew up going there and have always loved it. I strongly suggest that if you are in the area and haven’t been, definitely take the drive and go. There are beautiful waterfalls and amazing hiking trails throughout the park. I also like to take nature shots when I’m driving. I almost always have my camera with me and when I don’t I always have my cell phone. I also like taking sports photos. I have taken many photos of the women’s and men’s soccer teams. I have friends that are on the Women’s Soccer team and they always think its cool when I get a good shot of them playing. I also have a friend on the Softball team and hope to make it to some games this spring to get some good shots of them playing.

Great day, but chilly at Letchworth State Park

If you would like to take a look at some of my favorite photos, I have an Instagram account and you can follow me @donald_lockwood_photos. I have some nature photos, sports photos, and a portrait of one of my friends. I would love to get into doing more pictures of just people, I just haven’t had the people to take photos of.  Interested? Message me on Instagram.

Having an internship with MarCom I hope will help prepare me with what I would like to do in the future. I hope to one day either work for or run my own business to do freelance social media for small businesses in the area that are just starting off that don’t really have the money yet to pay a big name agency to run their social media and website, or can’t yet hire staff to do this important work. Now-a-days, you can’t really run a business without having a social media account, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media. Working with MarCom will get me website and social media experience, as well as writing blogs and press releases that will help me get a marketing and communication position after I graduate this spring.

Thank you for reading over my blog and look out for more soon.

Heyo GCC fellows!

I’m Pinn and I’m an international student from Vietnam. This is my first semester at GCC and I’m majoring in Computer Information Systems at GCC. This is an intro blog so I’ll will throw at you some random intro points about me:

  • Having been at GCC for 6-7 weeks, I’m pleasantly surprised to find so many international Japanese students are enrolling at GCC. I’ve always been fascinated with Japanese culture and I never imagined coming to GCC would offer me an indirect cultural exposure to “The Land of the Rising Sun.”
  • Coming from the tropical and humid equatorial climate of Vietnam, I’m preparing myself (physically and mentally) to fight head on with the intense winter sneakily creeping into Batavia.
  • One thing I crave the most after coming to the US is coconut water, which is much more expensive here compared to my home. But on a brighter note, I have easier access to fresh blueberries, cherries and certified-quality nuts (walnut, pecan, almonds…) which can be considered a luxury in Vietnam.
  • I love K-pop and my favorite group is Epik High. Tablo, a Korean-Canadian leader and producer of the group, studied English Literature at Stanford University so many of his songs are produced in English. I am rarely interested in rap, but many of Epik High’s rap songs are at the top of my playlist because of their poetic nature and clever wordplay. If you have only heard about K-pop for BTS, I recommend you check out one of Tablo’s English raps, “Dear TV which tackles the modern demon of tech and entertainment shows.
  • I love graphic design and have been tinkering with and learning to use Adobe software since middle school. I used to think I could take on graphic design as a career but I later realized I lack the artsy-ness and patience, so I’m keeping it as my hobby.

I read almost all the student writing on this blog before arriving at GCC and their blogging provided many helpful tips about being in America and being a student at GCC.

I hope my future blogs will be able to do the same for other students.

Student Blogger Intro – Zerin Firoze

I am a sophomore International student at GCC from Bangladesh. I am a scientifically literate individual and I am very passionate about science and secular activism. I love to advocate for science and secularism during my free time. I love the United States of America because of its advancement in science and technology, gender equality, secularism, democracy, freedom of speech, LGBTQ rights and diversity. I hope to be a US citizen someday.

I am an introvert. I have always loved reading and writing. So, the position of being a blogger and news assistant at MarCom is perfect for me. I am honored to be a GCC blogger.

I’m really passionate about the science clubs, but also plan to explore all kinds of campus activities closely so that I can make great and accurate blog posts.

Our College Experience

Standard

Hello readers of the GCC Blog,

Our names are Zarina and Sabina, we are two international students from Kazakhstan studying Digital Art at GCC.   We are not good in writing stories about ourselves. Thus we decided to write about GCC and Digital art major.

About GCC. We found this college on Internet while searching colleges with appropriate tuition, fees and location. In GCC we love that we can learn new things that we can apply in the future job. This college gives many opportunities to international students. There are many international events and many clubs that you can join.

About Digital Art. We like going to Digital Art classes, because we love creating new projects that we have never tried to do before. We can express our ideas and share them with other students. There are not many students who study Digital Art major here in GCC. The students help each other. We can practice and develop our skills while attending digital art classes.

About MarCom. We decided to work here because we would like to get new experience. I hope MarCom will give us good experience. We want to know the many sides of Marketing, how it works and decide in what field of future work we would love to work.

We are supposed to graduate in fall 2018. After graduation we hope that we will get a good job.

My Time at Genesee Community College

Standard

Hello everyone, I am Helmsley a current sophomore student here in GCC. I am a native of Ghana West Africa but currently live in New York City with my Dad. I lived and played Soccer in Lyon France for one year were my mom currently reside and later moved to the united states in 2011 to pursue a career as a sports agent because back home in Ghana, the ability to play soccer is a big part of the culture.

Ever Since I moved to America, I have been able to stay focused academically which ranked me as one of the top students in my grade and also my college life at Genesee Community College. My time here in GCC has also been great. I have been able to meet outstanding roommates who set an great example In the college community.

The Professors also play a big role because their able to answer any questions I might have on my project and encourage me to stay focused academically. In GCC, I have been able to collaborate with individuals from different parts of the world. Some activities we have participated in, include training with the soccer team, having fun at the student union, playing video games etc.

As I enter my second year at the college, more and more great things have been occurring, including some hours at WGCC (the college’s radio station) as a sports caster and working in the MarCom (Marketing & Communications) Office. After GCC, I plan on transferring to Indiana State University in order to gain a scholarship to Edge Hill University in England and pursue my degree in Sport Management.

Who is Mariah Paddock?

Hi guys, my name is Mariah Paddock, I’m on the left in the above picture.

First off, I want to tell everyone that I absolutely love Genesee Community College. I came here Fall 2015 with my best friend Megan, who’s on the right. We have been together from the beginning and as our time at GCC is coming to a close, I am leaving a lot more than a school behind. I am definitely going to miss everything about my time at GCC along with the people who surround me here.

Making GCC my home for 2 years is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I went out on a limb by enrolling in the Fashion Merchandising program. It has been a rollercoaster of fun, but by applying myself to my school work and being dedicated to extracurricular activities I have made my 2 years at GCC very successful. GCC has brought me so many opportunities and has helped me grow immensely. I will graduate this May and will confidently transfer to Cazenovia College to continue Fashion Merchandising in the Fall.

On campus, I am a pretty busy girl. I have been writing blogs for the GCC WordPress for about a year now, and I just recently became a publisher due to my internship. I am interning for Dr. Lina LaMattina for the Creativity Conference in April. My duties are anything she asks me to do! I write plenty of blogs, and talk to all sorts of people to get the conference in order.

Do you know what GCC Plaid is? Please say yes!

Well, I am also the GCC Plaid brand sales and marketing manager and blogger. I am responsible for the sales and marketing of all college plaid products. I had to develop ad campaigns for the items and I also use social media to spread word about the products. Below, I was even on a post card to show off the GCC Plaid!

As you know I am a fashion student, above is a picture of my wonderful professor Mr. Rick Dudkowski. He has taught me EVERYTHING that I know about fashion and business and is a huge part of the person I am today. For my fashion show production class, producing a successful fashion show will determine if I earn an A for my efforts. This year I am on the finance committee with my friend Min Muchler, also in the above picture. In addition to that, I am the scene coordinator of the men’s scene. When we were on our NYC trip, we visited a company call Gitman Brother’s and crazy me asked if I could borrow shirts for the fashion show and it just so happened that they said yes! You have to A-S-K to G-E-T! (The picture below is me with guys who work at Gitman Brothers)

Another fun fact about Mariah Paddock is I love love love Chanel. She is truly my inspiration, and my main goal in life is to own a Chanel suit and hand bag.

Among all of the things that I do, I manage to have fun. I am definitely one of those “high on life” kind of people. I love every day and try to make the best out of every situation. I love to ski, make crafts, paint, be with my friend and family, I love food and coffee, i can’t live with out coffee! I am a very happy, bright and cheery person, I was voted “Most Likely to Brighten Your Day” in high school, and I guess my classmates weren’t kidding!

Well, I hope you enjoyed learning a little about me, I will close with more pictures of my life…

New Student Blogger: My Introduction

Standard

Hey y’all! My name is Madison and I’m a new blogger. So, a little about me… hmm. I’m 27 years old and from Charleston, South Carolina. My favorite color is beige, and I’m obsessed with cats! I’m in my second semester here at Genesee Community College and live in the dorms at College Village. So far, my experience has been very forthcoming. There’s just something so comforting about knowing you’re where you’re supposed to be! My road to finding GCC has been whimsical. There have been lots of different trial and error scenarios that forced me into really finding myself and my strength as a young woman, and adult, and a human.clark

Throughout my journey, the biggest piece of personal philosophy I could form was that there’s always a method to the madness. No matter what you’re faced with in life, there’s always a way to make it through. Usually that answer is found through following your intuition and really listening to your heart of hearts. Since everyone’s lives are different, it’s important to remember that your own madness calls for your own methods.

My goal for this blog is to feed you nourishing tools to help you succeed in whatever “madness” you’re faced with. Whether it be researching what foods to eat for optimum memory function or posting about different activities going on throughout the campus, I just want to provide my readers with info to help improve their college experience.

As previously mentioned, I feel that food and recreation really help with the learning process. The food part is pretty self-explanatory in that different foods possess different vitamins which aid in giving different superpowers to your body. Recreation is necessary too because it’s important to balance work and play. Our brains work so hard for us all the time! Why not feed it a little healthy play time every now and then? tree

Another vital component to your success is encouragement! Having a person or a group of people cheering you on feels so good and makes you want to work hard. It may be out of your comfort zone to go out and meet people who will do that for you, but we are all on the same team at GCC. Going to the campus activities is a great way to meet like minded people… especially if people in your home life aren’t so supportive. Trust me, I’ve felt like the odd ball in my personal life before. I’ve felt like I was alone in wanting to better my life. Coming to GCC has opened so many doors to rooms that I’ve only dreamed about.

No matter your personal situation, remember that being unique is beautiful and the world needs to see it. Could you imagine all the houses in the world being the same white vinyl-sided, one story? How boring would that be? Even our eyes were made to see different color, and so were our hearts. Show your colors to the world… Who knows? You may warm someone’s day!

Well, I suppose that’s a decent introduction for y’all! Have a swell day, and good luck this semester.

Student Blogger: Danielle Lauricella

For my first blog post I’d like to give you as much information about me as possible, so you can really feel like you know me. My name is Danielle Lauricella, I’m a freshman here at GCC, and I’m in my second semester. I live in LeRoy, a small senior-pictown about 15 minutes away from Batavia. If you want to know more about why I’m here, my interests, and my hobbies, then keep reading!

For starters I’ll tell you why I’m at GCC. Right now my major is general studies, but I plan to declare my major in business administration or communications in the fall. After GCC I hope to transfer to a 4 year school; some of the schools I have been looking at are: SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, Daemen, and St. Bonaventure. I hope to get my associates degree here, my bachelor’s at whichever 4 year school I pick, and possibly continue my education to get a master’s degree. I hope to be the first in my family to walk the stage on graduation day and receive a college degree. I am very focused and driven on what I want, and I truly hope I can achieve all of these things.

Now, to get to know me a bit more personally, I’ll tell you some of my hobbies. I am a girl with a love for all different forms of creative outlets. In high school I was an art student, and pretty much the only thing I liked to make was black and white graphite portraits. I’m also a YouTuber, and often times when people hear this I get a lot of confusion. I’ve been interested in being a YouTuber since I was allowed to use a computer. I always played with the idea of of having my own channel, but never followed through because I worried about what other people would think. At the end of my junior year in high school I went for it, and ever since it has been something I love to do. I also have my own personal blog where I talk all things adult-ing, college, and just life in general; and I’m really excited to bring that to the GCC blog. I am also your typical social media crazed millennial, it’s not a lie when I say you can find me on almost any social media platform: Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, and Linkedin. In my free time I’m most likely online shopping or watching Shameless on Netflix (10/10 recommend watching Shameless). As you can tell I have a lot of interests and hobbies, but I like that about myself because I never have a moment of boredom.

That is everything to know about me for now! I’m just your average college girl trying to survive the day to day struggles of being broke with way too many homework assignments and not enough coffee to get through it all. I really look forward to posting more, and sharing my thoughts and ideas with you all. Until next time.

Hello Blog Sphere!

As my first blog, I thought I would share just some brief highlights about my background and then information about the special project I’m working on.

  • I’m from Alden, NY –  a small town near Buffalo.
  • At GCC, I’m a General Studies/ Liberal Arts major and I’ll graduate in Fall 2016.
  • After graduation, I plan on transferring to a four year school for Nursing. I am currently taking nursing courses here that will transfer over to a four year college.
  • I’m in the Honors Program here at GCC, and I am currently working on my enriched course project, which I have described below.
  • I chose to come to GCC because I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted my major to be
right out of high school. I was also thinking about interior design.
  • My favorite part of GCC is all of the wonderful people that I have met, friends and
professors. They have all contributed to a great experience so far.
  • I spent my senior year in high school interning at a doctor’s office. It was a great
experience and it allowed me to learn more about the health field before diving into a
    Nursing major.

Did you know? …Alcohol kills more teenagers than all other drugs combined. It is a factor
in the three leading causes of death among 15 to 24 year olds: accidents, homicides
and suicides. Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our nation, exacting
more than $700 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and
health care.

This first blog is to inform you about a survey that was distributed in the Forum
last week. (Candy passed out to those who participated in the survey as an incentive).

The survey was based on the class that I am currently in, Alcohol / Drug Use and Abuse. This blog will be based on the topic of drug and alcohol abuse, focusing on what the survey says that everyone is interested in learning about. The reason I am writing this blog is to inform people about alcohol and drug facts. The survey was a few quick questions in order to find out some basic information and give me a basis on what people are most interested in learning. One of the questions asked participants to rate five basic topics based on their interests. Please stay tuned for the results!
