Dalia’s Delightful Donations

Standard

A wedding dress symbolizes new beginnings and I want to be the individual who makes that new beginning happen.  My name is Kourtney Shearer and I am a Fashion Business student currently in my second year here at GCC. Bridal is something that has always stood out to me in the fashion world and I plan on working in the bridal industry when I finish my schooling. I love the fact that a wedding dress has so much meaning on a day  people say, is one of the most magical and significant days of your life. I believe in helping people find their dream dress, the dress they have been dreaming about since they were little. Seeing the happiness on their face and the awe from the family is something so special and I would feel honored to witness something so special. With that being said, I am going to be the scene coordinator for the wedding scene in this years annual fashion show.

A few weeks ago, we were given gorgeous gowns from Dalia’s bridal, in Snyder, NY. These dresses are going to be used in this year’s fashion show, which will be seen by over 1,600 people! I am overjoyed that we get to use these incredible dresses. We got to go through all the dresses and I was able to select an amazing assortment for my scene in the show. Everyone enjoyed looking at all the styles and fabrics used to make all these dresses. We can’t thank Dalia’s enough for giving use these unique gowns.

With the dresses that aren’t going to be used in the wedding scene, our fashion design students will create new designs and pieces. As students just starting out in the fashion design world, these projects are such a great step in the right direction. It allows us to become inspired and create new, never before seen items and collections. The opportunities this company has given us is such an honor and we can’t wait for you all to see what we have in store for you on April 29th.

Stay tuned for recreated items and pictures from the wedding scene in April!

Hello Blog Sphere!

As my first blog, I thought I would share just some brief highlights about my background and then information about the special project I’m working on.

  • I’m from Alden, NY –  a small town near Buffalo.
  • At GCC, I’m a General Studies/ Liberal Arts major and I’ll graduate in Fall 2016.
  • After graduation, I plan on transferring to a four year school for Nursing. I am currently taking nursing courses here that will transfer over to a four year college.
  • I’m in the Honors Program here at GCC, and I am currently working on my enriched course project, which I have described below.
  • I chose to come to GCC because I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted my major to be
right out of high school. I was also thinking about interior design.
  • My favorite part of GCC is all of the wonderful people that I have met, friends and
professors. They have all contributed to a great experience so far.
  • I spent my senior year in high school interning at a doctor’s office. It was a great
experience and it allowed me to learn more about the health field before diving into a
    Nursing major.

Did you know? …Alcohol kills more teenagers than all other drugs combined. It is a factor
in the three leading causes of death among 15 to 24 year olds: accidents, homicides
and suicides. Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our nation, exacting
more than $700 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and
health care.

This first blog is to inform you about a survey that was distributed in the Forum
last week. (Candy passed out to those who participated in the survey as an incentive).

The survey was based on the class that I am currently in, Alcohol / Drug Use and Abuse. This blog will be based on the topic of drug and alcohol abuse, focusing on what the survey says that everyone is interested in learning about. The reason I am writing this blog is to inform people about alcohol and drug facts. The survey was a few quick questions in order to find out some basic information and give me a basis on what people are most interested in learning. One of the questions asked participants to rate five basic topics based on their interests. Please stay tuned for the results!

Style Your Spring Stripes

Standard

Everyone has some stripes clothes in his or her closet, because stripes are just chic and very easy. It doesn’t matter where you are going to, on a beach or in a city. Stripes clothes always go well with your style. Spring and summer are coming, and the weather is getting warmer. Try some ways to show the freshness with the stripes that you totally forget in your closet.

  • Your stripes t-shirt with a sleeveless jacket
  • Your stripes t-shirt with a pair of high-waist jeans
  • Your stripes t-shirt with a pair of overalls
  • Your stripes dress
  • Your stripes skirt with a long-sleeve shirt

In the next two days, the weather will be so much warmer. Don’t be afraid to put on something fresh and go outside enjoying the sunshine! If we had no winter, the spring wouldn’t be so pleasant. Spring is the nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!”

Fashion for All

The fashion program is gearing up for the upcoming fashion show, Fashion is… on April 30th and we would like to showcase what individuals who are not in the fashion program think fashion is. I asked people what they thought fashion is and these were their responses:

Fashion is personality. A portrayal of a person even if you conform or stand out. It describes how you feel and how you choose to present yourself. -Olivia B.

Fashion is personality. -Annie H.

Fashion is clothing, but an extravagant piece or garment. It is not something you see everyday. Fashion is a statement piece. -Jovany J.

Fashion is expression. -Evie C.

Fashion is interpretive. -Bridget C.

Fashion is crocs, sweatpants, and some Bills gear. – Corey L.

Fashion is a person’s thought shown through material. -Grace K.

Fashion is culture. -Monica V.

Fashion is the way you dress yourself and how you present yourself. -Payton C.

Check back in the following weeks to see more updates on the fashion show and to see the unique definitions of what fashion is.

About Taking Winter Classes

Standard

o-college-facebook

Welcome back college, everyone! I hope you just had a nice break and got ready for spring semester. In the first day of college, I’d like to share about my experience in winter taking classes online. I heard many students are afraid to take classes in a quick term online, so I wanted to tell you something about taking winter classes.

In order to graduate in May, I decided to take two classes in winter. They were Business Communications (BUS 106) and Female Role in Film (CIN 242). They’re both 3 credits courses. CIN 242 could be a class for your humanities class. Both of these two classes could be your elective class.

First of all, you are right to know there’s a lot of work for a winter class because most of the winter classes are still 3 credits classes. The time you will get to finish the winter classes is about 3 weeks, which means it is a lot of work. Therefore, the first suggestion I’d like to offer is “never procrastinate”. For my BUS 106 class, I had 4 homework assignments, 4 quizzes, and 1 project every week. For my CIN 242 class, I had about 4 homework assignments and 1 essay quiz every week, and 1 final project which we needed to work for it every week. Compared with a normal class in fall or spring semester, this is a lot more work. But you will also get a lot more time in winter. The second suggestion I’d like to share is “manage your time”. The homework is usually divided by weeks. In the beginning of the classes, I printed out the homework deadlines and hanged them up on the wall next to my desk. Checking the schedule out every day and following it well helped me out from these two classes very well. Also, the last suggestion I have is “communicate”. Professors are really nice to talk to, and they’re always there for you while you’re taking winter classes. You’ll also have the discussion board to ask any question to your classmates. As an international student, I worked this out well. So it shouldn’t be a problem for most people.

Talking about what classes to take, there are not many classes, but enough and useful. In Winter 2015, there were business administration, cinema, English, geography, health education, history, math, meteorology, music, and sociology. I chose BUS 106 as my additional elective class and CIN 242 for my humanities class. From what I’ve known, it would be a great idea to have ENG 101 as your English class, GEO 101 as your world civilization class, SOC 101 as your social science class, or some health education classes as your health/PE/ATH class. These are most likely required classes for many students, and it is not too difficult to take them online.

Hopefully, you feel not afraid of winter classes anymore and have some ideas about what to take next winter if you need to. You need to know what classes you have to take. How to check your classes: Login into Genesis – Banner Self-Service – Student Services – Registration Menu – DegreeWorks-Run a Degree Audit. You’ll see all the classes you’ve taken, future classes you have to take, and what classes you might want to take. Then, you can look up for your classes, and add or drop your classes online also under Registration Menu. All the classes you have to take are shown under your Degree Works. Just remember to check the requirement first and talk to your advisor always.

I hope this is helpful. Wish you a great semester! Lastly, never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is a thief of time.

Start to Register Your Spring Classes!

Standard

school-books

Fall 2015 is officially done today! If you don’t have any final exam to take next week, you’re probably already at home relaxing! But please don’t forget to register your classes for spring. Spring 2016 is my last semester here so I’m graduating in May. Here’s some idea I want to share with you about registering classes.

o-COLLEGE-facebook.jpg

First, you need to know what classes you have to take. When you came to GCC, you took a test first about your English, reading, writing, and math skills. If you’re under the college level, you have to take classes to be ready for college. For example, you need to finish ENG or ESL 092 to get ready for ENG or ESL 100. Then, you’re going to take your ENG 101. Next, you’ll go to take ENG 102 or 105. All the classes you have to take are shown under your Degree Works. Just remember to check the requirement first.

Hammond copy.jpg

Second, you need to find out what classes you want to take as an elective class most likely. There’re a lot of classes which are interesting and exciting here. I can share some experience with you about what classes I’ve taken.

  • FYE 100 – First Year Experience or Foundations Academic Success. This course is one of classes I took when I just came here. It was really interesting and helpful! When I still knew nothing about American universities and GCC, this class taught me everything. My professor was Dr. Tom, who is a really nice person. After this class, I got my plans for my next 3 semesters, which was a motivation for me to graduate in 4 semesters. There’re 3 sections for FYE in Spring 2016 and they’re still open. Check this out!
  • ART 123 – Ceramics 1. This is a very good choice if you need to take an art class. Ceramic is such a fun to play with, and this course is a very relaxing class! I took this class with Ms. Dugan in my second semester, and she was such a sweet professor! She still has 4 open sections in Spring 2016. Start it now!
  • CPS 101 – Introduction to Creative Problem Solving. This is a course I take this semester and it’s just done. This is really helpful for you to build your creativity. I used to think I’m not a creative person, but I believed I am a creative person after this class. You just need to find a way to be! There’re 2 sections at college and 2 online classes in spring.
  • CEP 101 – Career and Educational Planning. This is a class I’m taking in spring. I’m still taking this course with Dr. Tom, and I’m pretty sure this will be also a really amazing class! Our class section is already full, but there’re still 4 sections at college and 3 online sections open for you in spring. If you’re graduating in Spring 2016 just like me, you probably want to check this out.
  • COM 120 – New Communication Technologies. Are you interested in social media networks? Do you really know how to use them? Or do you need to use them in your future career? This is a new class next semester by Ms. Bello. There’s only 1 section open and it’s at 11am on Tuesday and Thursday. It’s going to be a fun class!

TimeManagement

Last, manage your time. Time is everything in college! You fall asleep for couple minutes in class, and you’re probably missing the most important part today or your homework this week. You decide to delay your homework several times, and you might be failing this class soon. If you want to graduate in 2 years, basically, you need to take 6 courses for 3 semesters and another 5 courses for the other 1 semester. I know to keep attendance for 6 classes is hard because that’s what I’m also always struggling. My solution for this problem is to take online classes. When you’re taking 6 classes, to take 1 or 2 online classes is a really good idea, unless you have trouble taking online courses. Pain is temporary, but GPA is FOREVER! And if you have any trouble, always remember to talk to your professors and your advisor! There’re so many people helping you here.

ready-set-go.jpg

Stop procrastinating! Go to register your classes now, so you won’t miss your classes you need or you want. Good luck on your final papers and final exams! Also, have a nice break! I’ll see you next semester.

A Brownie Surprise!

Standard

kate

This blog post was written by the spectacular, Katelyn Trowse.

On Friday December, 4th 2015, the Advertising class that Professor Mr. Dudkowski teaches had quite a scrumptious surprise for their last day. John Sherman, a brilliant and hardworking student at Genesee Community College surprised his entire class with a Hershey’s Hot Chocolate Brownie Holiday Special from Pizza Hut. Also, he went above and beyond setting up drinks, cups, plates, forks, and special coupons specifically for the amazing food and desserts Pizza Hut has to offer. It was phenomenal and everyone was thrilled! Not only is John a student, but he is also the manager at Pizza Hut in Batavia, NY. Todd Fanron who is the general manager, was kind enough to make a special delivery of the goodies before class even started that morning. In conclusion, Mr. Dudkoswki and the entire Advertising class wanted to give a huge thank you and shout-out to John Sherman, Todd Fanron and of course Pizza Hut, for making their last class memorable.

20 Study Tips for Finals

Standard

exam-week-info

There’s only one week for classes! Are you stressed out and nervous for your papers and tests left? There’re 20 study tips for you to do better in the last week and your final exams.

calendar-reminder-final-exams-19481482

  1. Create a study guide.

Outlining the important information you need to learn can be helpful, both in creation and to refer to during your studies.

  1. Ask questions.

Your professors and TA’s are there to help! Ask them questions regarding the material and the exam so that you’re prepared when exam time arrives.

  1. Attend the review session.

Review sessions offer vital information on exam format, what will be on the exam and key concepts you should be focusing your studies on.

  1. Start early.

If you always start ahead of schedule, you’ll never be cramming the night before an exam. You’ll almost always perform better in doing so!

  1. Organize a group study session.

It can be helpful to study in groups – sometimes. Evaluate whether or not studying with others will be beneficial to the subject as well at your learning process.

end-of-semester

  1. Study things not on the study guide.

Study guides aren’t always comprehensive – they’re just suggestions of the main concepts to learn. Use your study guide for its intended purpose: a guide. Be sure to fill in the blanks with related information.

  1. Take breaks.

You won’t be able to memorize or comprehend all the material at once. Balance is key – ensure that you reward learning with break times to recharge and relax.

  1. Stay well-rested.

There’s a lot to be said about a good night’s sleep. Make sure you’re well-rested so that you can be fully focused during your exams.

  1. Create a studying schedule.

Splitting the material into chucks you can actually achieve can be very beneficial. That way, you can keep track of what you’ve accomplished instead of looking at the big picture and getting overwhelmed.

  1. Prioritize your exams.

Some exams will be more difficult than others, some you may find easier to study for. Some may be worth more of your grade than others. Make sure to evaluate all of your exams to consider and determine all of the involved factors so you can study accordingly.

final-exams

  1. Study for the style of exam.

If it’s multiple choice, you’ll need to know definitions and concepts. For essay exams, focus on your understanding of all the concepts presented, with examples in mind.

  1. Quiz yourself.

If you think about and create actual exam questions, you will likely become more familiar with what you need to study and, in the meantime, familiarize yourself with the type of language that will be on the exam. Draft potential exam questions and quiz yourself so that you can set expectations of what you need to focus on.

  1. Meet with your professor or TA.

Often times, meeting with an instructor, whether it’s a professor or a TA, can give you helpful hints for what to study and ways to prepare for the exam.

  1. Reorganize your notes.

Evaluate and reorganize your notes into what’s important, outlining important concepts, formulas dates and definitions so they’re easy to understand.

  1. Pace yourself.

Make sure you stay focused and don’t burn yourself out. A great way to do so is to pace yourself rather than opting for the dreaded all-nighter. You can easily pace yourself by following tips like starting early, creating a study schedule and taking breaks when necessary!

final-exams-yes-1euhhlv

  1. Teach classmates.

Learning by teaching is a method that really works! If you work with a study buddy and explain concepts to one another, you’re re-learning the material all over again. It’s a great way to reinforce what you’ve learned and help someone in the meantime!

  1. Revolve your focus.

Switching up your subjects is a helpful way to learn everything for your exams while preventing burnout on one topic. Make sure to switch it up before your eyes glaze over! That way, you can keep studying for longer periods of time while maintaining your focus.

  1. Color code it.

Create a system that allows you to color code material that’s going to be on the exam by what’s most important, less important, etc. This will help you focus on the most pertinent information and prioritize the material.

  1. Visualize.

If you’re a visual learner, it can help to create mind maps or diagrams to visualize how the concepts you’re learning relate to one another. This is especially beneficial when learning concepts that build upon the understanding of one another, like in science courses.

  1. Make it fun.

It’s easier to focus if you adapt to studying by quizzing yourself, creating acronyms or rewarding yourself for a job well done. Create a game plan – literally – that allows you to accomplish tasks and be rewarded for each.
