“Think Pink”

I made sure to take some time out of my day and volunteer an hour between class for this event that would spread awareness and education about Breast Cancer. October is Breast Cancer awareness mouth, as you may know. This event was sponsored by SHAG(Student Health Awareness and Advocacy Group). I am in this club and if you are interested in joining feel free to attend a lax meeting in the “pillow room” at 1pm every Friday. It was great to be a part of something that was bigger then myself.I encourage everyone to schedule some time to help someone else or to help the community.

A Must Read!

I just read a fantastic book titled “Running with Scissors”, by Augusten Burroughs. It was also made into a wacky movie, for those you who aren’t readers. It’s a memoir about the authors “non- traditional” childhood and how he persevered over dysfunction.  This is a truly inspirational book about survival in a misfit situation.

Camping Out for a Cause

Cost:$1.00 and a can good

I have the opportunity to be involved in Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. There has been a plethora of volunteer projects Phi Theta Kappa has been involved in throughout the fall semester. This Friday, an event will occur called, “Camping Out for a Cause” , this will promote awareness about homelessness in the GLOW Region. I recently  learned in a SGA meeting about a food pantry and clothing pantry that is here at GCC available for student use.So if you are in need feel free to use this resource. The can goods from the event will be donated to GCC’s Food Pantry and the gentle used winter clothes will be donated to the Community Action Center of Genesee and Orleans counties. The event will start with a informative presentation in T 102. There will also be special acts including performances by students and the Forum Players. There will also be a movie shown: “Pursuit of Happyness”. This event is a part of the Volunteerism and Service requirement for the Leadership Program. Stay tuned for pictures of the event in my next blog.

Bullying Rally

Standard

hey Ebony here,

A group of students and staff got together on Thursday October-21-2010 for a bullying rally. Many of us stood out in the union with our signs and posters speaking out on bullying. We marched from the forum, into the cafeteria, into the student union, and back into the forum, Chanting “ Bullying has got to go, hey hey, ho ho”. While some stared, others joined in.

Things got emotional when some students shared their stories. Words can leave scares, and scares can last a lifetime. Some people do not have the ability to stand up for themselves and block out others who are negative towards them. Let’s help one another instead of bringing each other down.

Countless amount of people committed suicide and lost their lives because they were being bullied or teased.

Bullying – An act of repeated aggressive behavior in order to intentionally hurt another person, physically or mentally. It is a certain way for a person to gain power over another person.

This can happen anywhere from school, home and/or work. Consists of three basic types of abuse, emotional, verbal, and physical

IF YOU’RE NOT APART OF THE SOLUTION,

THEN YOU’RE APART OF THE PROBLEM.

Hey Kiley Here to tell you about my fun filled weekend!

October 16th

GALLERIA MALL

College Village: Saturday Getaway’s, a great opportunity for residents to see what Western NY has to offer.I made sure to have a set amount of money I was willing to spend. Making a budget for yourself is vital because who wants to be broke.   This trip couldn’t come soon enough with Halloween right around the corner! This has to be my favorite mall in the area. The girl residents have all anticipated this event, that’s for sure. I spent a bundle  at my favorite luxury product store: Sephora. My favorite make-up line has to be Urban Decay, it realy is beauty with an edge. My favorite purchased was a colorful “Book of Shadows”,sometimes a girls gotta splurge! What’s your guilty pleasure product?I love the city of Buffalo,it just has this exuberant glow and energy about it.I dig just strolling the city and taking it all in.

Pomegranate:Persian restaurant

This was a first for me,I was so excited to try this exotic cuisine. It was fantastic. The must have is the homemade Persian ice cream. The pomegranate soup was piping hot and hearty, but lacked flavor. The fried BBQ style veggies were to die for! The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere full of culture.

AASU Basketball tournament

Standard

Hey, Ebony here

The African American student union club decided to come up with a Basketball Tournament for our first event. Yesterday October-19th, we held sign ups for those interested in playing in the tournament. A lot of people seemed interested, but we only got a few people to sign up (at least that’s a start). The more people we get to sign up, the more fun we can have. There will also be raffles and entertainment at the game. Another day will be held for sign ups sometime next week.

So many students complain about how bored they are, so we are trying to make this event as fun as possible. This tournament is for everyone, men and women. We are thinking of involving faculty to play, but that’s not finalized yet.

For more information you can email me at ereece@my.genesee.edu with any questions. Also if anyone is interested in signing up to play, you can contact anyone in the government from the club.

Everyone is welcomed.

Ken Wheaton’s book reading

The First Annual Grand Prarie Festival

Q&A and book signing!

It was interesting to see both sides of Mr. Wheaton. I had heard about this event from my Bus. 203 class (he was the guest speaker) and was interested in attending this event. I had a class at 11:15, so I have to put my time management skills to the test. Since I could not be at two places at once I had to make a choice. I chose to be a little late for my class. Wheaton is not  only an author, but the managing editor of Advertising Age Magazine. This is a man that wears a lot of hats. I don’t see how he could find the time for such an extensive side project. I purchased the book and will be sure to write about it when I finish, but I’m busy so don’t hold your breath.Ninety people carefully listened as he read a funny passage from his book with a smooth meticulous voice.I enjoyed Wheaton’s humorous wit during the Q&A and his distinct passion for his work.He was extremely personable and very interesting to listen to. I find the advice that he gave to young writers very motivating and useful for the future. Last year I had the pleasure of interviewing the author of the novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain,  Garth Stein, for The New Courier. This was for a “A Tale For Three Counties 2010”.On October 18th an announcement for the 2011 will be made! Stay tuned.

Cajun food served by Ken Wheaton

This type of food is directly related to the geographic location from the book. The author, Ken Wheaton, raised in Louisiana knows his way around a kitchen. There was both vegetarian rice and beans and an authentic Louisiana gumbo. The gumbo’s recipe is actually in The First Annual Grand Prarie Festival. What a creative way to promote a book! Both dishes were delish. I preferred the vegetarian dish because it was a tad spicier. I my palette could get used to this southern style of cooking, that’s for sure.

Hey it’s Kiley giving you the 411!

SEX IN THE DARK

This controversial title was an  event held at College Village about safe sex. It was very informative and beneficial to many students. Our society is perceived as being open, but in reality is closed regarding sexuality. Sex education is practical and beneficial to students. It’s great that College Village is taking a step in the right direction in their programing. Sure it’s great to have fun events, but educational events prove to be rewarding.

Business 203

This class is very rewarding. The instructor Mr. Dudkowski encourages and pushes students to think creatively. He is very passionate and insightful during lectures and realy cares about his students. This course is not in the requirements of my major, but I have always been curious about advertising, so I decided to take the course. We had an assignment at the beginning of the year to critique an article, print or online, for Advertising Age magazine. We had a surprise guest, the managing editor of Advertising Age magazine, Mr. Ken Wheaton. To meet someone that is successful in the field of advertising is very inspiring. He was very professional, yet laid back. This was refreshing to see. He was was very personable and exhibited progressive business ideals. Many of the things he was speaking about I could relate it to my honors class theme, the democratization of information. He also, mentioned the show Mad Men, which is my favorite show at the moment.

Must see foreign film

Amelie is a French film, therefore you will have to deal with subtitles. It is a great story about a creative introverted girl who is afraid to, “make a mess out of her life.” This movie made me think about how much sentimental items mean to me.Can you think of any personal items that mean a lot to you?Would you notice if they were out of place? This film is zany and  is great visually.

Hey-it’s Kiley here telling you what’s up at GCC! So lets talk about the weekend.

Friday October 8th

KARAOKE NIGHT!

I made a brief appearance with my fello blogger, Ebony. I just love karaoke, it realy brings people together. I sung an oldie by The Ronettes, “Be my baby”.

Take a blast to the past with this link:

Be My Baby

Laundry Day. See you there.

If your a fello Neil Patrick Harris fan, like myself, you will understand this caption’s reference. If not educate yourself and Google him. So like any other typical college student, I’ve questioned if there realy is a correct way to do laundry.Living at College Village has it’s perks at times, free laundry!I live in B building, which conveniently has a laundry room on the first floor.(I’m on the second, so it’s not a long haul)   Does it realy matter if you pile it all in or separate it by colors. Call me adventurous, but I learn by trial and error. What’s your laundry style?

Here’s a handy tool in case your having laundry trouble:

Lewiston’s Sixth Annual Psychic and Holistic Fair

If you haven’t already gone to a psychic fair for entertainment purposes, I encourage you to open your mind and do so! I had a life path reading by a Psychic named Bruce and my palms read by a low profile reader. These events inspire me to dream big and motivate me to complete my long and short term goals.

Tandoori’s

Have you ever tried Indian cuisine? It is the spice of life and I encourage you to try this exotic food because it’s good to try new things.Personally, I love the feel of this restaurant it realy captures the Indian culture. So what to order, a mango lassi is a must for a drink. Beware of salty lassi, however, I found out the hard way it was not my cup of tea. Every time I go to an exotic restaurant I like to try new dishes. I feel that many Americans are stuck in the hamburger-hot dog would you like fries with that mentality and this closes doors to other delicious foods, such as Indian. I love spicy foods, so this is my version of Nirvana. I tried a soup called Sabzi Shorba. It was a spicy soup with a variety of veggies and a hint of ginger. You should always get a traditional bread with your meal. I choose a rosemary naan:delish. The dish I tried was porbo pola considered a signature dish of east-Indians. For dessert I recommend a hot kheer (rice pudding).  Don’t be afraid, try new foods! Invite a little class and culture in your life.
