Blood Brothers day two vocal.

Standard

Hey it’s Kiley giving you an update.

So today I couldn’t hit a C, but I could hit a high F.I haven’t truly sang in awhile, so the break in my voice is ridiculous. Confused? Ok, I will break it down for you. A singer has a chest voice (low singing range) and a head voice (high notes from C to F usually), but in-between a singers range is their break. This is a weak part of their voice they must smooth out.

So this is my vocal obstacle at present. Hopefully since I am taking a music class that offers vocal coaching I will fix that issue. Another constant battle with a singer is breathing . If you don’t sing you are thinking um..isn’t that automatic? No, a lot of singers tend to sing from their throat and you can hear a significant sound of tension in their voice. This is why it’s important to sing by using your diaphragm. So I am trying to make personal voice goals, so I can truly be the best that I’m capable of.

Day one: The read through

Standard

So last night was a mark to the start of our show: Blood Brothers. The rehearsal started like any typical new club or group coming together on a common objective and interest by going around and introducing oneself. Its important to know every person in the cast and their role in the show.  Every actor must break the ice with one another and form bonds throughout the process of getting a show together. I know the majority of the cast, so I felt pretty comfortable.I kept a positive attitude and tried to not get discouraged due to rough notes or lines.

The read through was rather interesting. Some small parts were not casted: therefore we went with the flow and substituted parts as we went along. At times I read Mrs. Lyon’s while Emily (double casted as Mrs. Johnstone) read Mrs. Johnstone’s  lines. I felt by reading these lines I got a better understanding of my characters relationship with Mrs. Lyons. In general full read throughs-including music are important to every cast member. This is where the overall theme is projected: think would you read only parts of a book?  If so you would miss the underlining themes, this is why a read through is necessary.

Our director, MaryAnne Arena, said it was important to research some of the themes. How genetics and environment plays a role in how a child is brought up shown in twin studies and how economic status and mental illness (in the family) plays a role  in someones life. I have taken a psychology and sociology class, so I have a relative understanding of these topics and the controversial arguments on both sides.  We as a cast has a lot to do, but it’s part of the process. I am excited to start acting, dancing, and singing on stage. We made made up a schedule from now until February. Due to In The Blood opening in February we do not have as much time as we normally do, so we must work extra hard and overcome this obstacle.  Overall this first day was the start of something and with hard work this will be the start of something great.

On a separate subject: transferring. I just found out I got into Canisius College and Medaille. I am realy excited to find out from the other three colleges I applied to. It seems that every thing is coming up roses and I hope it’s here to stay.

December 15 2010

This elegant evening was held  here at GCC! This event was hosted by the Genesee Community College scholarship foundation. I had the opportunity to represent Student Government as a senator. If interested in joining please feel free to stop by the SGA office located in the Student Union. The start of the next semester of SGA will begin  a recycling effort around the campus. If you are a supporter of being green please feel free to join our cause and share your ideas!  I was happy to see that GCC  theatre students volunteering for this exquisite event, full of enthusiasm and sophistication. The night began with a cheese and wine tasting. Guests were welcomed by the GCC family with open arms. AVI food service served a scrumptious meal. It was a serve yourself style with a variety of food that any food pallet would enjoy. The employees were very prompt and professional. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performed a mix of holiday selections. The audience members were filled with the holiday spirit by this beautiful music. Emily Hellenbrook ,a 16 year old “vocal prodigy” , gave a great performance on several songs. Viewing performances always inspires me to dream big and create my own versions of artistic expression. Holiday performances keep the magic and spirit of the season alive! Art promotes critical thinking skills and  creates change in our society.

Mrs. Johnstone

Mrs. Johnstone

Hey its Kiley here to share some great news!

I decided to try out for this years musical and I got  double casted as Mrs. Johnstone with Emily Jones. In my hometown, every summer we would have summer musicals and Emily did four shows with me.  I was not only surprised I got this lead role, but full of excitement. I can’t believe I considered not trying out!  I would like to do a series about the process and development of a typical musical. This will educate some curious folks about why people choose to experience trials and tribulations for  three days of performances. People that don’t perform do not understand the memories and personal growth that takes part during a show. From start to finish I will share my personal experience.

Auditioning can show a beautiful vulnerability in people. This is due to taking a risk and not knowing the outcome. In the audition I noticed a passion in myself that I had not seen in myself in a great while. I think everyone needs an outlet of self expression to channel energy and create something that is bigger then yourself. Theartre expresses a bigger message about society. It questions and lets actors and viewers to do the same.

I encourage all of you to follow your dreams and take a risk. Don’t waste time, doing something that makes you miserable. Spend your time in something that matters to you.

Theatre Testimonial!

“I remember my real first theatre performance was with Maryanne in the show Peter Pan. I had not originally tried out for the play but Patti Simmons asked me to be a fill in for one of the Indians and then I ended up getting put in for the play and also receiving the part of the Fairy. This definitely changed my life because I was always use to dance performances on stage but not theatre productions. They are definitely a lot of work but way worth it in the end. Theatre has given me confidence to stand up in front of a crowd and to not have any fright what so ever. I know that if I do my best the crowd will appreciate it. Shows that I have been involved in were: Peter Pan (The Fair and an Indian), Urban Muse (The Show Girl), The Great Jungle Journey of Fenda Maria (The bird talker, and Fenda Maria’s Best friend), Chicago (Liz).”

I hope her story inspires you to audition for the show!

Create a long lasting memory!

Standard

Hey it’s Kiley! I will share a personal story that may encourage others to try out for the musical or children’s theater show, here at GCC! The audition may be nerve-racking, but if one perseveres and is casted all freak-outs are worth it! There’s a tangible approach to acting, it’s a craft, like something you can actually touch and work on, and embody something more.  On stage I feel most comfortable with myself and this passion will never leave me!

I went into my audition, like a blank canvas, not knowing what to expect. I was handed a script with the words The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in the-Moon Marigolds, silently I thought, “what am I getting myself into?” .I was a little nervous and jittery at the same time but I was willing to put myself out there in order to be cast. The director, Ed Scott, was well aged and talked with slow meticulous diction. He was not short but not tall, wearing monochromatic colors that blended in with the room. These subtle details I took in, to help me infer the type of person he was. As he introduced himself and talked about the plot of the production I would take note of his mannerisms. The way he approached the characters he was talking about, I needed to figure out which character I would be best fit for.
I listened intently as he described his vision and the characters involved. The drama is about a struggling single-parent family in the mid 60s, and with only five seen characters. I did not fit the mother or the sick old woman because of age. At the time I had bright red hair and a bold outfit to match. I thought about how my appearance may play a part in getting cast, this made me feel a bit jumpy.  Ed had me read Ruth with a woman the would read Beatrice(the mother). We went in the other room, got acquainted and practiced a few times. When the time came to audition I used all my energy to portray this character, who I did not fully understand . The lines I had to say for the scene were written to be manic and irrational. My interpretation at first was a little off. Ed calmly explained Ruth’s character more detailed. Ed had us do the scene one more time.
I went out of my audition not knowing what to expect for the outcome. I was only in 10th grade and did not have much experience in dramas. This was also GTG an adult theater group, so I promised myself that I would not be heartbroken if I did not get a role. I went out of there knowing that there was only 3 parts I could possibly get, the odds were not in my favor. I was pleasantly surprised by a phone call that I had gotten the part and would be Ruth. Practice would start on Monday.
The first practice was a read through of the whole drama. The cast was made up of five women who would soon become almost a second family to me. We sat in a lopsided circle and politely made awkward conversation before we started. I read through my lines uneasy and slowly at first  finding out the character I was soon to pretend to be.It was intense and a bit complicated. I was out of my comfort level, once again. The musical prior to this was Annie where I played, Miss Hannagan, a manic drunk who serves to frighten and yet give some comical relief to the audience. I sighed thinking that I would have to play yet another eccentric character. After the read-through my director asked me in private “would you consider smoking onstage?, Ask your mother if it’d be ok.” My initial thought was to say “No are you crazy”, but I ended up saying “sure thing”. I would also have to be physically abused on stage. This was a bit startling at first but I was eager to effectively portray Ruth’s side of the story to the audience.
Practices went long and were emotionally as well as physically draining. I needed to find a connection to my character, so I researched to gain more insight. I read and watched several films concerning epileptic seizers. I learned from my mom that I myself had these as a child. This was a taboo fact my mom never shared with me before. I felt silly at first to do an epileptic seizer, but my director was patient and understanding. I would often get so discouraged at  practice, but my cast members were very positive and supportive. My director latter informed me that I would not have to smoke on stage because of the buildings regulations. I was relieved to say the least. Ruth was now addicted to black licorice. I did not care for it in the beginning but by the end I looked forward to the “treat” scenes.
I found myself having trouble remembering lines. I tried everything from saying them over and over to writing them down, but nothing seemed to stick. It was difficult because my lines were not logical, and jumped from topic to topic. My director suggested that I tape my lines and play the tape before I go to sleep, surprisingly this seemed to work. I remember the feeling of excitement when I got those few troubling lines with ease.
A character is not one dimensional, as an actress its your job to find these subtle quirks. I tried to show Ruth’s vulnerable and innocent qualities that were overshadowed. Ruth was a gamma ray just a bolt of energy with no direction. She was misunderstood and her self confidence was beaten out of her. I felt  so much compassion for her and made it my obligation to tell her story.
The show was drawing near and the tension was high. I now had to think about costumes, make-up, and everything in between. I had special bonds and inside jokes with each member of the cast. When the stress was high we all knew how to push each others buttons. Although there were times when I was so frustrated I considered quitting, but now I consider the lifelong memories.
On opening night I had butterflies, I was eager to go on stage. I felt that sort of invisible magic on stage. My  fair pale skin tingled as I made my entrance. I had embodied my character each word clear and every expression audible. Radiant energy poured out my skin till the lights dimmed ,and the curtains closed.

SAVE COLLEGE RADIO!

This was a great experience to be a part of! The bands included MC CHRIS, SCHAFFER THE DARKLORD, and JAMES KURDZIEL. The turnout was 150 people which is respectable. MC Chris was on on of my favorite shows C-LAB 2021 and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.I was simply awestruck. I think it’s great that GCC is supporting college radio. I had a lot of fun helping out and watching the show. It was awesome to see some CAB members also helping out at the show.

WGCC AND MY BIRTHDAY!

My birthday weekend was lots of fun. I stated by waking up early and catching the sunrise. I am starting to fall in love with the Niagara Falls area, which is in the area of the school I’m looking at: Niagara University. I stayed at The Giacomo, which is wonderful, I may add. I highly recommend staying at this luxurious hotel. My sleep was sound and comfy and the breakfast was delish. So what was cookin’ in Niagara Falls, you ask?I ate some tapas (small plates) at Wine on Third and also a new Thai restaurant Mii. Both great and wonderful service. I had the best desert at Wine on Third and they even lit a candle for my birthday. These restaurants are defiantly worth checking out. I strongly suggest getting the breaded truffle mac and cheese and Lamb lollipops at Wine on Third. The sweet rice at Mii is all the buzz in my opinion. This was defiantly a birthday to remember! I went to my favorite historical town:Lewiston.  I went to the Village Bake Shoppe and bought an almond joy bar and the best cake I have ever had in my life. I also went to D’ Avolio and bought a dark chocolate balsamic vinegar to put on top of my famous brownies for a special kick. How will you spend your next birthday, it only happens once a year- celebrate it with style.

MarCom family!

I would like to share a special thanks to the MarCom team for making me feel a part of something bigger then myself.  This is how GCC starts as a community college, but ends as a family. This is my push to get involved. The true college experience is only achieved if you put yourself out there and make your voice heard. I would like to make a special thanks specifically to Jackie Christenson for working so hard, pushing and encouraging the Alumni callers and making the best treats.

Hey it’s Kiley giving you the low-down.

It’s that time of the semester where everyone is overwhelmed with finals and projects.Fear not, like Miss Ebony said: “stay positive”.

Guest speaker Paul Maurer, co-founder and chairman of Re-Tree WNY

This was sponsored by the Earth club and was proven to be a truly rewarding experience. Maurer is part of a nonprofit organization that’s goal is to plant a total of 30,000 trees around Buffalo area. This is necessary, due to a tragic storm in 2006 that destroyed many leaf -laden trees in Buffalo and Erie County.I was shocked to here about the damage  due to the storm. Maurer expressed that it was important to educate the neighborhood about the proper way to take care of these new trees. That it was important to call these tress their own.I thought that the many fundraiser ideas were great, especially because clubs are cut due to low funds. These innovative grass root ideas may influence students to start a revolution. It just takes one small person with one big idea to start a revolution.  He expressed that it was our job as a  community to fight for our earth. I was impressed by his devotion to this cause. I feel that many students expressed a desire to get involved in these community efforts.

Don’t forget to collect some gently used winter wear, magazines, old cell phones, and dry cell batteries and bring it to the GCC forum. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, as they say. Why not make use of some items that haven’t been used in months. Don’t be part of the problem be part of the solution. This will be one small step to ending a national problem. If everyone helps out and brings just one or two items, this will make a huge difference in the events success. I personally am planning on rounding up some magazines to help this great cause!

Last night I applied for two colleges Canisius College and Medaille College. For the typical second year busy GCC  student this is necessary to ensure a students future. There’s a lot to think about campus tours, applications, and scholarship opportunities. So if your a second year student it’s important to get started now!

Basketball Tournament Success

Standard

November 1st– 2010,

The African American Student Union club had great success in our first basketball tournament. As president of the club, I had to do a lot of planning and running around to make sure that everything was set. Ron Spioto (Athletic Director) was kind enough to let us use the gym, and equipment to make our event which started at 6pm and ended at 8:30pm more exciting.

At least 30 students signed up to play, all of them males. Females were able to play, but none of them were interested in getting on the court. We also had a lot of people in the audience who supported us.  There were 5 teams; we had 6 but one team bailed out.  We also did a 3 point contest for males and females, and a dance contest which was exciting. The dance team also came out and performed for us, they did a wonderful job.  This was more like a street ball competition, with the guy on the microphone telling jokes with music playing in the back ground.

This was a fundraising event and a promotional event for our club. Raffle giveaways were available but we were not able to give anything away because we did not generate any income for the raffles. All in all everyone had fun, which was all that mattered at the moment.

This gave everyone something to do on a Monday night.

Our next event will be a fundraising event, which we are discussing now.

Thanks to everyone that came out and to the African American club members for having such great team work.
