Things to Do Around the College

Standard

Up until these past few weeks, I wasn’t familiar with the parts of Batavia that are closer to me than Walmart is. GCC is located on the east side of Batavia and Walmart is on the west. Every week a bus comes to take students living on campus to stores on the west side of Batavia. No one really shows us around the local neighborhood. But this summer I have been exploring by bike and yesterday a friend drove me to around to see some stores and places close by. It was like going on a field trip! Now I have a better mental image of where things are in Batavia and a list of nearby must see and useful places for anyone who feels stranded on the GCC and College Village campus.

  1. Harrington’s: “Kitty corner from ArrowMart,” this store is run by the Harrington family, who owns a farm and sells fresh produce. There you can buy a variety of necessities and treats like fruits, vegetables, eggs, milk, honey, cookies, cheese, pickles, flowers etc. They also have a small café that sells soup, salad, and paninis. I met Dianne Harrington, the owner of Harrington’s, and she is a sweet hardworking, modest woman.
  2. Lickity Splits: This is an ice cream shop close to GCC that serves Perry’s Ice Cream. You can buy two scoops of ice cream on a cone for just $3. My favorite flavor from here is Mint Chocolate Chip.
  3. Blondies: This is an ice cream shop on Route 5. It’s also close to GCC. They have Hershey’s Premium ice cream flavors like Outrageous Oatmeal (YUM) for low prices!
  4. Horseshoe Lake: This is a beautiful lake that’s within walking distance from the college dorms. It is a private lake but if one or two people go walking around it on the quiet roadways, it shouldn’t be a problem.
  5. DeWitt Park: A recreation area right behind Blondies, that surrounds a lake. There is a walking trail that goes around the lake, and fishing opportunities.
  6. ALDI: An affordable food market. This store is a bit too far to walk to but a perfect biking distance. ALDI is a great place to shop for food on a budget, which most college students appreciate.

Stay tuned!

Grass in the WindWalking around outside with my camera is something I love doing in my free time.  It’s a way for me to escape the pressures of work and fall into adventure. It also gives me time to recharge my social meter. Although I’m from the city, I’m no social butterfly. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t like being in crowded places unless I’m with a friend or two. In NYC you’re in a crowd of strangers on a daily basis. You could be on the train or standing in line at a café, and all of a sudden you’re trying to avoid eye contact with someone. That’s why I really appreciate living upstate. There are plenty of open fields for you to run through and scream in if you want to.

This past Father’s Day, God called me out on a stroll. I visited the meadow by the G.C.C.’s Nature Trail, where the Phi Theta Kappa bench sits, and the blackberry tree stands. I had a lens attached to my camera that could zoom out really far because I wanted to see a deer! But none pranced out as soon as I arrived so instead I enjoyed the little things. Like the blackberry tree, it looked magnificently out of place with bright red and purple beads of juice. I plucked the darkest looking one I could find and popped it in my mouth. So sweet!

Blackberry tree

I then noticed a pretty cool looking birdhouse near the edges of the woods. G.C.C. has tons of birdhouses around the campus. Have you ever spotted one? They’re here thanks to Joe Lullo, an Eagle Scout who donated his time to building them five years ago. (Thanks Joe!) But as I approached the birdhouse, I heard

A birdhouse by Genesee Community College

alarms go off. The gentle and almost unnoticeable chirping of the birds became sharper and louder. I knew then that I was being watched, and that all of the hidden animals were being warned of my presence. I made fluid and natural movements from there on out, nothing jerky or threatening. I relaxed and took the pictures you see posted here.

Before heading back home, without having seen a deer, I revisited the blackberry tree and decided to tear off a hand-sized branch for my roommates. The branches of the tree hung low to the ground, and I was underneath them as they canopied over. While enjoying another berry, I heard a little scratching noise behind me so I peered over my shoulder. There was a squirrel in the tree, not too far from where I stood. And if he wanted to run along the branch and jump on me he could have done it in seconds. While I was trying to see if that’s what he intended to do, he got closer. So I turned on one foot, ducked out from under the branches, and dashed a few feet away from the tree. And that was how my little adventure ended.

After heading back home and sharing blackberries with my roommates, I got an appetite for more fruit. A friend of mine told me about a fresh foods market within walking distance from the dorms. I’ll be writing about it after we take a visit, so stay tuned for the next blog!

Iesha

Hello everyone!

My name is Iesha DeLesline.  I am a 25 year old sophomore who comes from the Bronx, N.Y. My goal is to become a dentist and my major is general studies. After graduating, I’ll be transferring into Brockport University’s pre-dental program. I am also a resident assistant at College Village and a member of GCC’s Christian Dance Club, P.A.T.H.S.!

When I was 18, I went to Borough of Manhattan Community College but found out that I wasn’t ready for school. My maturity wasn’t where it needed to be, and I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do in life.

Later on I joined a dental assisting program and I enjoyed learning about the oral cavity and dental procedures. When I began working at King’s County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, I met young dentists who were fresh out of dental school. We got along great and appreciated each other’s enthusiasm for dentistry. They helped me learn more, and encouraged me when I told them I was thinking about becoming a dentist. They made a big impact on my life.

I’m excited to be your new blogger! Stay tuned to learn what someone from New York City likes to do in Batavia!

Hello, my name is Caroline Leake and #iamGCC.

2015-04-30 20.56.33[1]

I started attending GCC as a freshmen in August 2012. I had previously graduated from a local high school, 30 minutes from GCC’s Batavia Campus, in June of 2012. I came to GCC because it was close to home. Also, I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to study. In January of 2014 I declared a major in Human Services. On May 17th 2015, I will be graduating with an Associates in Applied Science in Human Services.

My best experience at GCC would have to be my job as a work study in the Admissions Office. But this is not the only awesome experience that I’ve had at GCC. I also have loved having great professors that are willing to help you. Additionally, the professors have, or still are, working in their career; they know what they are talking about. They use their experience as a great aid, which makes a great learning environment for students.

A word of advice to those who looking into going to college. Don’t underestimate yourself. If you do underestimate yourself, you may fail. Take your college career one day at a time and do all you can to stay organized.

This semester I had classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am till 3pm. Then on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s I had class from 9am till Noon. I squeezed in an internship and my job in between my classes. Along with non-school related activities, including kids group at church and doing things I enjoyed.

I hope in the future that I am doing something I love. At some point I would like to go back to school to get further education in a specific area of the Human Services field.

Upon Graduation from GCC, I will be attending Word Of Life Bible Institute in the fall. But GCC will forever be in my heart and has given me a great building block to build the rest of my education on. I cannot even imagine where my life would be now if I hadn’t attended GCC.

De-stress Yourself

Standard

There are only a few more weeks left until the GCC fashion show! Sounds stressful, huh? Why yes, it is. Putting on a fashion show is a rather tricky task, and tons of hard work. So much stress comes along with it including biting your nails, having the urge to snap, maybe even pulling your hair out. With very little time to make everything come together, where is the time to relax? Sure you might say that there is none at all and that you are always on the run. But for a successful fashion show to come together you need to eliminate that stress and just go with the flow. Sure, it doesn’t sound appealing and may even seem like that’s a no-go. Although, what sounds better? Stressing out to the point that you have no idea what to do and carrying an unbearable weight on your shoulders, or feeling calm and confident that you are doing things right? Sure the time might be disappearing quickly but you do have to take care of yourself as well. Especially since everyone says that your health is the number one thing.

Now, some people might already be thinking about the day of the fashion show, that’s when the stress fully kicks-in. At this point everyone is hoping for the best; hoping that the models you hired will come on time, that nothing rips before the show or gets dirty, and most of all hoping that none of your models fall down the runway. Of course, there’s so much that comes with the fashion show and the negative things are always thought about, but why not let the positive outweigh the negatives. Here are a few tips on how to de-stress before the fashion show arrives. Number one would be to perform a few breathing exercises that will stimulate the mind and calm down the body. Of course plenty of sleep will do justice, but if you are nervous for the show and with the added excitement mixed in, one night of rest might not cut it. Enjoying the day before by having fun with the rehearsals and thinking positively might help to eliminate some stress.  Go into another world and just enjoy the calmness of it. That’s where meditation comes into play, this can be effective in calming the mind and creating a sense of happiness. Eating healthy is another way to de-stress. The Next tip would be to keep your eye on the ball. Sometimes we can all get caught up in the planning and details rather than what it’s all about. Take some time for yourself, take a spa day or even a yoga day just to get your balance back into check. Your health is the most important thing; spend time doing anything that relaxes or de-stresses you. It always works and it’s the best way to relax and ensure that the fashion show will be a success.

The Best Decision I’ve Ever Made

Standard

After high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was afraid of the future and the unknown. I felt like I didn’t want to commit to a full college education, yet I was too young to look for a full-time job. As I was trying to decide, I knew time was ticking by; I had to make a decision. One day, I applied to SUNY GCC Arcade because I thought that you couldn’t go wrong with getting a college education. I then chose to major in Tourism & Hospitality Management because I have always enjoyed working in the hospitality industry. It turns out that that was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Professor Kohl (Center)

Professor Kohl (Center)

In my first semester, I took five classes. My two favorite classes were Hotel Operations with Professor Plouffe (professor at Batavia Campus) and Introduction to Tourism and Hospitality with Professor Kohl. Professor Kohl is the Director of Accommodations at Darien Lake. He was the one to teach us the basics and the history of tourism through different projects and homework assignments. One night for homework, we were told to write down our favorite recipe. We all kind of wondered where exactly he was going with that assignment. The next class, we took a little field trip to Tops to find out how much it would cost to make our favorite recipe for a restaurant. It was such a fun way to learn something that is so important in our industry! He also took us to Darien Lake to see the campground, the hotel, and the park. As a student, it’s amazing to be able to see hotels inside and out.

The Del Monte Renaissance Hotel front desk.

The Del Monte Renaissance Hotel front desk.

The best part of Hotel Operations with Professor Plouffe was that we had the opportunity to visit The Del Monte Renaissance Hotel for one of our classes. While we were taking notes there, we ate exquisite food. Afterwards, he took us through the entire hotel: rooms, lobby, restaurant, kitchen, meeting room, laundry room, salon, spa, everything! Professor Plouffe made sure that, by the end of the class, we all had a better understanding of what it takes to operate a hotel. Every professor I’ve had goes above and beyond to help everyone learn what they need to know to be successful in their future.

Lastly, in those two classes, I met two of my best friends. The three of us have been taking classes together ever since. So, little did I know that I was enrolling in the best time of my life. I’ve made two amazing friends, been taught by impeccable adjunct professors that take time out of their busy schedules to share their passion, and I have learned so much all because I applied to SUNY GCC!

Battlefield

Standard

With exactly one month left until the 34th annual GCC Fashion Show, titled “Fata Morgana,” one could say the fashion majors have been stricken with anxiety, excitement, and disturbing amounts of caffeine. We no longer understand the meaning of sleep and those relaxing midday talks with our friends over lunch are but a distant memory.

I am no survivor of this epidemic. As a solo scene coordinator for the opening scene I have a lot riding on my shoulders. On top of planning memorable choreography and being a member of the Back of House committee, I am also designing and producing ten unique outfits to send down the runway. The stress level is intense and sleep deprivation has already ensued. Though it is easy to focus on the negatives, the positive vibes heavily outweigh my inhibitions. I’ve known since I was eight years old that I wanted to spend my life as a fashion designer and nothing has changed my mind thus far.

20150322_011838My scene’s title is “Battlefield,” and is motivated by life’s obstacles and the strong women who overcome them. Whether it was illness, the loss of a loved one, or a break up, everyone has conquered something, making them a warrior in life’s battlefield. Much of the artistic inspiration came from personal photographs taken in the Arms and Armory department of New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was taken back by the intricacy and attention to detail in each and every piece. Aesthetically, my pieces are very simple and I don’t accessorize, as to not take away from my art. This contradicts the very things that attracted me to my inspiration, but I see it as taking the best parts of my muse and making them mine. Each outfit has a gold piece to symbolize the daily armor we all wear as protection from pain, loss, and vulnerability. I truly believe that I am more than a fashion designer, I am an artist and everything I do should have meaning behind it.

I’ve never been more proud of myself than with the work I’ve done so far in the fashion program. Tears of relief, happiness, and nostalgia will follow my last model off the runway as I step onto it myself to thank all of those who have supported me. What a fantastic way to end my last year at Genesee Community College.

A Stylish Arrival

Standard

A few days ago, a large box arrived on the premises of GCC. This box was sent from the Buffalo David Bitton Showrooms in
NYC. Inside were a variety of clothing items from the Buffalo David Bitton Spring line. Due to the GCC fashion program’s
close relationship to Buffalo David Bitton, and more specifically, PR Director Diane Alexander, we have had the privilege to use new items from the Buffalo David Bitton in three of our fashion shows. From “Fashion Forward”, “Ethereal”, and now “Fata Morgana.”

FullSizeRender (15) 2This year the Buffalo David Bitton line will be featured in a music festival themed scene entitled “Festival Haze” which is being produced by Kylie Dunn and I. “Festival Haze” will embrace the best styles of Coachella and modernized free-spirit trends, and feature items from Buffalo David Bitton and Lord & Taylor. We would like to give continued thanks to Diane Alexander, and everyone at Buffalo David Bitton for continuing the tradition of featuring their product line on our runway, and everyone else involved in assisting in the production of our scene. We can’t wait to show all of you what “Festival Haze” and “Fata Morgana” have to offer!

5 Reasons A Summer Job Can Be Fun

Standard

With the Spring Semester coming to an end, many of us start to think about summer vacation and what we’re going to do. For me, it’s always been to find something to keep me busy and out of trouble. That’s why for the last few years I have worked at our very own local amusement park – Darien Lake. So let me share with you my top 5 reasons a summer job can be fun, whether it be Darien Lake or another place of employment.

Number Five – Earn Money

Now, I know that we all like to earn some spending money. It also helps us to show others that we can be independent and dependable.

Number Four – Build your Resume

With a job, you’re able to add new skills and positions to your resume that could help you earn future full-time employment. Many of us don’t think that our summer jobs are important but every little bit helps in connecting your formal education with real world experience.

Number Three – Experience something new

With a summer job, you are given the opportunity to try new things. For example, you may have never wanted to lifeguard, but you could try it out at the local community center and end up loving it. You also may end up finding a hidden talent through trying something new.

Number Two – Gain New Skills

Every year I return to the same summer job at Darien Lake and every year I learn something new.

Number One – Make New Friends

To me this is the most important thing about working. I wouldn’t be returning to my summer job each year if it wasn’t for the relationships that I have formed with my fellow co-workers. It’s also important to remember that you are there to do a job, but it’s nice to be able to have someone that can relate to what’s going on at work.
