Bohemian Chic

Standard

The 35th annual fashion show at Genesee Community College is so very close being that it is only 2 days away! So with that said the question ‘What is fashion to you?’ is sparking the interest of many.
This year the 8th scene of the show is Bohemian chic featuring children’s wear. This scene is produced by Jessica O’Brien and Jordan Reese with assistance by Bailey Johnson and Jeannie Riveria. This scene is coachella inspired with a hint of children to wow the crowd and grab the attention of the audience.

When I think of fashion I think of the quote “fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life” to me this means you are who you are and what your style is, but that doesn’t mean it defines you. It allows you to extend what fashion is to you. After this year; I will be attending LIM in New York City to continue with my dreams of fashion.
35 years of fashion has been demonstrated and shown through this community, and this year we, as a whole are producing fashion is. We can’t wait to see what you all think of this years show. Hope to see you there!

Cover Letter and Resume Tips

Standard

When you haven’t updated your resume for a long time or you haven’t started one, it is quite difficult to start with. You can get A Guide to: Resume Writing from our Career Services Center at Room B201 of Batavia Campus, and the guide will show you the formats you can use, the information you can and cannot put in, plenty of vocabularies you can choose, and two samples of the resume. But here are some tips I’ve learnt from my CEP class.

  • No errors in grammar and/or spelling.
  • Have a full but not overcrowded page that can be easily scanned.
  • Highlight the most important information.
  • Have the information related to the career and/or the job you’re applying.
  • Make sure all information is clear.
  • Organize it well with sections like education, experience, honors, skills, references, etc.
  • Get help from a professional from the relating careers.
  • Always refresh your resume when you’re in a new position or learn something new.
  • Proofread, proofread, and proofread.

You’ve found a new job and been getting ready to send your resume, do you need a cover letter? The answer is always a “yes”! Skip a cover letter, and you’ll miss an opportunity to sell yourself. A cover letter can let you reveal your personality and build the rapport. You also can get A Guide to: Writing a Cover Letter from the Career Services Center, and the guide will show you the format you need to use, the information you need to put in, and a sample of a cover letter.

  • No errors in grammar and/or spelling.
  • Have a business format for the cover letter.
  • Identify the position you’re applying and explain why you’re interested.
  • Determine several strong skills you own and tell how they can apply to the job.
  • Show that you know enough about the company in the company’s “voice”.
  • Thank the readers for taking time and describe how you’ll follow up in the end.
  • Keep it short and sweet.
  • Ask someone to read it.

Your resume and cover letter say a lot about you. They determine whether you’ll be called in for an interview or not. Be so good that they cannot ignore you.

What “Fashion Is” To Local Style Bloggers

Standard

Recently I reached out to several popular fashion/ life style bloggers in the Western New York area. I Thought it would be great to get their ideas on the essence of fashion, and the meaning it plays in their lives. Lindsay Robson of NickelCityPretty, Andrea Barberia of GlamourCocktail, and Ruya Kirac of SweetShortand Stylish, were kind enough to reflect on the question of what fashion is to them, and provide us with heartfelt responses:

IMG_2853

“Fashion is the greatest form of personal expression. It’s a way to show who I am and tell my story without using words. Fashion is fun and exciting and gives me an outlet to take a chance and step out of my comfort zone.”

-Ruya Kirac

“I’ve always been captivated by fashion and what it has to offer ever since I was a little girl. Since starting my fashion blog, Glamourcocktail.com, its allowed me to fully emerge myself, take my love for fashion to the next level and show the world all about my style and travels.  For me, fashion is being able to express who I am as a person, where I come from and how I want the world to perceive me without having to say anything at all. I love being able to read people’s style and outfits and already know a little bit about them before even meeting them. It’s about expression, imagination and having enough courage to wear something because it makes you feel good, and I think that’s really important.  I think it’s amazing how an outfit can give you all the confidence in the world, and I think it’s at those moments when I fall in love with fashion all over again.”
-Andrea Barberia

Amerikuh Defined

Standard

What does “Amerikuh” mean in your own words?

I decided to name my scene “Amerikuh” based on the Palmer Trading Company’s past campaign titled the same, with all of the current events going on in America; whether that be politics, music, or religion. Their slogan is  “All Of Us Belong” I felt it fit perfectly with what I wanted to convey to the audience because we all want a sense that we fit somewhere in today’s society.

What are your design influences?

I am really obsessed with Europe’s fashion scene particularly London, I just love that British menswear is so classic and innovating with clean lines. My design influences are Dries Van Noten, Ray Kelvin for Ted Baker, Christopher Bailey for Burberry, and Alessandro Michele for Gucci and of course I have tons more but these are my top 10 lol.

What are your future career plans beyond GCC?

I plan to transfer to South Dakota State University to finish my Bachelors of Science in Apparel Merchandising and study aboard in London to earn my Master’s Degree in Menswear design.

The Power Behind Acrimonious!

Standard

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAWGAAAAJDNlNGNlNjQxLTRkYWQtNGQ1OS05MjA4LWY0YTU1MzlmNmFjNw

When asked the simple question, “what is fashion to you?”, I automatically think of my very own personal style. I would have to say that my style is pretty edgy mostly because I’m never seen without wearing all black and a leather jacket. Upon creating my scene for this years 35th Annual Fashion Show, I had to make sure it was super edgy, sexy and dark using the only colors of black and gold. That’s how I came up with “Acrimonious” for my scene name.

My clothes for my scene consist of actual clothing pieces from my closet, clothing and accessories from Kohl’s in Batavia and having the extremely talented Erin Nesmith make an entire outfit. I was very specific with what looks I wanted for my scene and I’m so excited to finally showcase them on the runway in only a couple of weeks! As I am identified as the scene coordinator for “Acrimonious”, I would not have been able to put it all together without the help of Erin Nesmith, Matt Wagner who is my scene assistance, Nyla Council who drew an amazing picture for my backdrop and of course all of my beautiful models.

As much as I want to keep talking about my scene, I don’t want to give too much information away because I want to leave it as a surprise for everyone watching the day of the show! I am so anxious and excited for April 30th to be here and I know everyone that is involved in this years fashion show is too. So attend GCC’s 35th Annual Fashion Show and watch everyone’s handwork and scenes come to life! You won’t want to miss this amazing event.

-Kate Trowse

TaOM8bUm_400x400

“My name is Matthew and I will be working with Kate Trowse on her scene, I will be helping with the hair and makeup portion of her scene and will also be making sure all the models are runway ready! Makeup is such a passion of mine because it can really make a person come alive! Just by adding some coverage and color to a face can really make a person stand out and look their best. I want to bring my techniques to the table to help Kate make her scene the best it can be and I have no doubt that we will have a killer show!”

Welcome Lauren Mye

LaurenMyeBloggerSpring2016

Hello Blog Sphere!

As my first blog, I thought I would share just some brief highlights about my background and then information about the special project I’m working on.

  • I’m from Alden, NY –  a small town near Buffalo.
  • At GCC, I’m a General Studies/ Liberal Arts major and I’ll graduate in Fall 2016.
  • After graduation, I plan on transferring to a four year school for Nursing. I am currently taking nursing courses here that will transfer over to a four year college.
  • I’m in the Honors Program here at GCC, and I am currently working on my enriched course project, which I have described below.
  • I chose to come to GCC because I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted my major to be
right out of high school. I was also thinking about interior design.
  • My favorite part of GCC is all of the wonderful people that I have met, friends and
professors. They have all contributed to a great experience so far.
  • I spent my senior year in high school interning at a doctor’s office. It was a great
experience and it allowed me to learn more about the health field before diving into a
    Nursing major.

Did you know? …Alcohol kills more teenagers than all other drugs combined. It is a factor
in the three leading causes of death among 15 to 24 year olds: accidents, homicides
and suicides. Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our nation, exacting
more than $700 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and
health care.

This first blog is to inform you about a survey that was distributed in the Forum
last week. (Candy passed out to those who participated in the survey as an incentive).

The survey was based on the class that I am currently in, Alcohol / Drug Use and Abuse. This blog will be based on the topic of drug and alcohol abuse, focusing on what the survey says that everyone is interested in learning about. The reason I am writing this blog is to inform people about alcohol and drug facts. The survey was a few quick questions in order to find out some basic information and give me a basis on what people are most interested in learning. One of the questions asked participants to rate five basic topics based on their interests. Please stay tuned for the results!

Pneu Moda

Standard

The 35th annual fashion show at Genesee Community College will be upon us in just a few short weeks. Lauren Countryman, whom began studying fashion while abroad in Florence, Italy (2014), now finds herself a scene coordinator for this years show. After gaining a lot of knowledge and experience through her course work and through internships, she will be graduating, post-show with her classmates in May!

raf1

This photo is a direct example of designer, runway inspired garments that helped create the original design thoughts and inspiration for Lauren.
(both from vogue.com)

The name of her scene. Pneu Moda, is inspired by the aesthetic of classic looks infused with modern streetstyle; together creating a perfect dichotomy. Of course, the act of creating is undoubtedly autobiographical at the roots, but the way in which she has explored her past for this sustainable collection was in sooth, on a higher plane.

raf2

Here is another sample from the 2015 fall menswear collection designed by Raf Simons. This is just another look at the way she interpreted the trends she sees everyday with more classic, contemporary styles.

It all began and will inevitably commence, so arcane and comprehensive; meanwhile, consciously translating fashions to the demographic and never losing sight of her own style perspective or interpretation. The words that comprise the scene name, Pneu Moda, also drove a vast majority of her inspiration for the garments of which she upcycled herself. It really gave each individual piece a noticeable light of unconventionality, and deeper meaning. The word Pneuma, derived from the ancient greeks, is defined as “an actual breath (to breathe), wind, the vital spirit, soul or creative energy force within a person.”

cfss

Chiara Ferragni Streetstyle: source link = http://www.theblondesalad.com/2015/07/barbie-in-hollywood.htmlThis photo is a great depiction of the streetstyle that she wanted her scene to embody. Chiara Ferragni, Italian Fashion Blogger, is wearing a Jaydee Barbie in Hollywood jacket with a pair of vintage Levis Strauss.

A quotation from Anaximenes observes that “just as our soul (psyche), being air, holds us together, so do breath (pneuma) and air encompass the whole world. According to Diocles and Praxagoras, the psychic pneuma meditates between the heart, regarded as the seat of the mind. Analogously, others have said pneuma to be the active, generative principal that organizes both the individual and the cosmos. A lot to take in, but she found great took great insight from the other facet of the word – that being our ‘childlike’ spirit, something every person, creative or not, should have and take advantage of. In all aspects of life, there is nothing more trying or telling than time and aging. Not only do they contribute to your ability (or lack thereof) to have the perspective to understand your purpose, then and now but they form your experiences, choices and decisions that make you an original copy.

jlyonsss

Last, but certainly not least, is the epitome of chic, Miss. Jenna Lyons, J. Crews creative director and president. Whether she is attending the Knowles’ wedding or captured for her exceptional street-style game at fashion week, there is no denying her eye for style. These are all images of people and fashions that Lauren collected and utilized as inspiration for Pneu Moda.

‘What you’re meant to do’ – can be a very formidable opponent in the game of life. When people make the  choice to open their eyes, heart and mind, you’re standing at the threshold of your past and what’s destined to be.  If you become open to chance, opportunity and experience – without preconceived ideas, you’re allowing life to happen as it’s meant to.

The profound amount of research and creative energy put into this scene was driven by that same childlike spirit that pneuma embodies. This is too often mistaken for unsophistication or insignificance and here it’s so embraced and has both the look and feel of high style. This collection is presented with  hopes to define fashion in her own words: unprecedented yet meaningful and fashion-forward.It will really be a showcase of a ‘Pneu Moda Savoir Faire.’ This scene, alongside all of the other amazing collection in the show this year, are sure to provide both intrigue and enchantment. The opportunity has arrived to open your eyes in new ways with new fashion. Stay tuned for more on Pneu Moda, other scenes, show updates and more, we cannot wait to see you there!

Balancing sleep – social life – and grades.

Standard

6D2ZXHave you ever heard someone say,

The three most important things each college student needs is sleep, good grades, and a social life. But the bad news is they can only have two out of the three.” ?

Well I’m here to tell you that you can have all three, it’s not impossible! But the government might start tracking you once you’ve mastered the skills I’m going to teach you here. 😛

Before we dive right in, lets talk about priorities. How you rank each of these three from most important to least is entirely up to you. Some people may think that sleep is more important than grades, or that social life is the most important. Know what the order of these three are to you. I’m going to use myself as an example. Sleep > Study > Fun/Social Life. I think sleep is most important because without it I’m emotional and cranky. Studying becomes so much harder for me when I’m tired, and I don’t think my friends like it when I’m moody. My grades are the next most important for me, because I came to school to study, and if it were not for school I would not have the friends I have.

Mastering Sleep & Grades

image4

Photo from mustangmorningnews.com

Falling asleep and waking up around the same time each day helps to get your body on a schedule. Some people are so good at this that they don’t need an alarm clock to wake them up. Sleeping helps your health, mood, and memory, which are three very important elements in the learning process. So you need sleep to stay alert in class, and to help you remember details for a test. I have definitely stayed up all night studying for an exam before, it’s not fun or recommended but I’ve have to do it. I’d stay awake until 3 or 4 am, dive into my bed for 3 hours of rest (and memory storage), and then study again for another hour before I took the test. That is my technique during tough times and it’s gotten me A’s, but that’s not the best way to study. At least not for me. Studying for an exam in chunks a week or before the test day is the best study method in my opinion. Cramming a lot into my brain is very stressful and if I’m tired it can be a very emotional experience. I find myself thinking, “Why am I in this field anyway? Who cares if I don’t do so well on this test. Would it really be that bad if I quit. I can’t do this!” But when I study for a test in chunks over a period of time, I feel safe enough to sleep and I don’t stress out on the test day.

Incorporating A Social Life

Clubs, community involvement, building relationships with roommates and classmates all have helped me keep a social life ( for the most part ). If your like me, and school and sleep are your top two choices, then it’s easy for you’re social life to get overlooked, but it doesn’t have to. I live on campus, so when I have some free time I go to programs. I spend time conversing with my room mates about our classwork or things we have in common. I call friends from back home when I feel super lonely. And I try to small talk with people who sit next to me in class. To build long term friendships and social commitments I’ve joined clubs and groups of my interest, and I participate when we go to events and such. I listen to people when they tell me their story, and after seeing the same faces on a regular basis, I get comfortable enough to open up and share about myself. That’s what works for me. Other’s have said that room mating with people who are in their same major has helped them build friendships too. Even if I had 7 or 8 classes, I would take a moment to say hello to the person studying next to me, or talk to my resident assistant about how my life is going. Perhaps I’d join a study group that way I could get my academic and social bar filled up at the same time. Having a social a life is possible when you are prioritizing sleep and grades.
