Pull Out The Plaid & Support Your Vendors and GCC Students!

Turkey Day and Black Friday are just around the corner, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to it just as much as I am! However this year instead of Black Friday, why not try out Plaid Friday! This is an alternative to your typical Friday after Thanksgiving, a day in which consumers could and should support small local businesses, instead of the big box stores.

You may be wondering how Plaid Friday was born, and the answer is in Oakland, California in 2009 with gallery owner Kerri Johnson. She got fed up with the holiday shopping focus always being on big businesses, and she wanted to create a way for local and small businesses to “weave together” and create their own event and economic opportunity! This idea has since grown and is now known across the nation.

You can join this great event, and support the cause by wearing plaid and shopping the best sales on November 24th! No need to wake up at the crack of dawn! Sleep in! The deals will be there all day. Some of the participating local merchants in our community include:

Always ahead of the curve, Genesee Community College’s Fashion Design program created a plaid/tartan design several years ago. GCC’s plaid is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartan, National Archives of Scotland. The College’s official plaid is used by faculty, staff, clubs, and students at various events, particularly the College’s recent 50th Anniversary celebration where it helped to build the collegiate spirit.

Genesee Community College is one of the very few community colleges in the nation that has our own plaid design, especially one registered in Scotland, designed by alumni with various  related projects managed by students! The plaid design has been used on men’s neck and bow ties, women’s silk scarves, as well vests, kilts, t-shirts (short and long sleeve), socks and stationary. New GCC plaid products will continue to provide students with merchandising opportunities.

Be The Lucky Duck-The 9th Annual Ducky Derby!

Wouldn’t it be great to win some extra money right before spring break? Well I have a super easy and fun way for you to do that!

On March 9th at 12:30 in the pool at the Batavia campus, the 9th Annual Ducky Derby will be held. Prior to this date you can purchase a ticket and donate anywhere from $1 to $5, and when you donate you get a souvenir rubber ducky for your generous donation.

If your duck comes in first place you will win a percentage of the proceeds, and the ducks that follow will win a door prize. We have a lot of door prizes donated from local businesses. So even if you don’t win the cash prize, don’t be discouraged, you will still have the chance to win another prize!img_6912

$1 Duck – 10% of funds raised

$2 Duck – 20% of funds raised

$3 Duck – 30% of funds raised

$4 Duck – 40% of funds raised

$5 Duck – 50% of funds raised

 

All donations for the Ducky Derby are going to the Genesee County United Way; the United Way has already had a total community impact of $9,250,576, it’s amazing that as little as a $1 donation can make you a part of that impact.

There will be a table set up either in the forum or the cafeteria where the tickets and ducks will be sold throughout the day. Tickets will be sold now until March 3rd, which will be your last day to get a duck in the race. If you’re willing to spend $3 on a coffee, why not use that money to donate for a good cause? Stop by and enter your name into the race now!

Fun In Winter

Talking about living in Batavia, snowing is a big topic when it’s winter. There’s definitely some inconvenience in winter because of the snow. However, “snowing is an attempt of God to make the dirty world look clean”. So there’s definitely a lot of fun which people can do in winter when it snows. Since the winter doesn’t want to leave here still, let’s talk about the fun in winter.

Winter is with a lot of snow and bad weather maybe. But winter is also the time for comfort, for good food, for some company from families and friends. The warmth you get from a talk next to the fire is always warmer than only the fire. Feel stressed so far? It is the time for some love.

Boo Ball, a Night of Fright Around the Corner.

It’s the time of year where you don old costumes, pull out the excess rolls of toilet paper (to clean up parties), and lament the absence of the great pumpkin. Wax hands hasn’t stolen the creepiest thing for this month at GCC. Of course I’m speaking about Boo Ball. Now you can’t go around pranking anyone, so you may ask where are the scares. The scary thing is that you’ll actually help someone if you party at this event. The price of admission, and yes there is one, will cost you a dollar or one canned good. They send the food to the homeless here in the area, where I assume there are not as many awesome Harry Potter themed parties.

The theme of this year’s Boo Ball is in fact Harry Potter. Yes, you too can release your repressed inner nerd in this costume based eve of frivolity, which will leave some of us in tears, for better or for worse. Despite whatever dissension you think I follow I’ll set the record straight; I think it’s gonna be awesome, and this is with fandoms likes, and background aside. There are only a few of these dances in the near distant future, and for the overall year the amount is slimmer still. If you want the chance to participate then I personally invite you as a member of CAB supporting this thing.

If I have peaked your interest then allow me to sate your voracious mind, and the questions I know are bubbling in your brain. This event will have more than just dancing planned, we’ll have food for the hungry, the college students, and potions for the venturous. But we have more than just food and drink. Attend and you will learn that the college village members have been assigned a house corresponding to the their residency, oh, and there will be games. If you fancy yourself a dueler, a match may clear your head; if perhaps you have some Felix Felecis, and desire a chance to sport your luck, then partaking in the scavenger hunt is in order. However, even I can’t tell what fate awaits the winning house, and only time will tell the victors prize; and it surely awaits in candy, and glory.

For those who don’t want to pay then maybe some work will do the trick. The event could use volunteers to make this thing stand out, and of course you’d meet the men and women behind the scenes. Everyone at CAB has a heart of gold, and the price to pay, of time and effort, you’re rewarded with a company of those with the heart to hold all these college events, and the skill to organize them. If you can donate and volunteer you would be a hero in my eyes, and I am sure those you’d help would too.

The games and fright is on ghosts and ghouls, and I would be delighted to see any of you there that fateful night, to sit a spell, or show your dance moves. This event will be fun, and from what I know there will be enough sweets to satisfy your palate; you’ll gain your dollars worth of entry: that, I guarantee. Have some fun, share some laughs, and enjoy the Harry Potter themed madness. Halloween comes only once a year, so I always make the best of it. I hope to see you at the Boo Ball on Thursday, October 30th from 8-12pm.
