“Think Pink”

I made sure to take some time out of my day and volunteer an hour between class for this event that would spread awareness and education about Breast Cancer. October is Breast Cancer awareness mouth, as you may know.This event was sponsored by SHAG(Student Health Awareness and Advocacy Group). I am in this club and if you are interested in joining feel free to attend a lax meeting in the “pillow room” at 1pm every Friday. It was great to be a part of something that was bigger then myself.I encourage everyone to schedule some time to help someone else or to help the community.  

A Must Read!

I just read a fantastic book titled “Running with Scissors”, by Augusten Burroughs. It was also made into a wacky movie, for those you who aren’t readers. It’s a memoir about the authors “non- traditional” childhood and how he persevered over dysfunction.  This is a truly inspirational book about survival in a misfit situation.

Hey, it’s Kiley ready to blog.Yet another busy week here at GCC. This is the week of Halloween and I anticipate fully celebrating it! Halloween is my favorite holiday because its full of magic, adventure, fright, suspense, and fun!

Camping Out for a Cause

I have the opportunity to be involved in Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.There has been a plethora of volunteer projects Phi Theta Kappa has been involved in throughout the fall semester. This Friday, an event will occur called, “Camping Out for a Cause” , this will promote awareness about homelessness in the GLOW Region. I recently  learned in a SGA meeting about a food pantry and clothing pantry that is here at GCC available for student use.So if you are in need feel free to use this resource. The can goods from the event will be donated to GCC’s Food Pantry and the gentle used winter clothes will be donated to the Community Action Center of Genesee and Orleans counties. The event will start with a informative presentation in T 102. There will also be special acts including performances by students and the Forum Players. There will also be a movie shown: “Pursuit of Happyness”. This event is a part of the Volunteerism and Service requirement for the Leadership Program. Stay tuned for pictures of the event in my next blog.

A Night At Sea

This is the GCC formal that will happen in December, but the planing details are still on the table. There has been several meetings that have discussed these details and will continue till the actual event. Groups involved include the following CAB, SHAG, and College Village RA’s.

Fireside Chat

October 28th

This is a transitions workshop that will be held from 5:00-6:00 pm. This club touches on college life and beyond. It is a very laid back club and environment (in the Student Union) Discussions on practical real life issues, such as texting while driving and transfer concerns.So come and enjoy the chat!

Jared Mahone, a recording artist from Columbus Ohio, kindly performed his music for anyone that was interested in listening in the student union. It was a wonderful experience and something different to bop your head to. He also beat boxed and gave us a little bit of Michael Jackson (you cannot go wrong with that :-). Jared Mahone has been doing music for five years. His parents did music in the country, so with that Jared grew up into music. He also graduated college and performed at different schools. His uncle was a writer and inspires his music. You can call this a family business and Jared is within the third generation. He does not really categorize his music in the typical genres of music; he calls it ” Soulful Groove Funky Pop”.

After his great performance, he sold some of his shirts, CDs, stickers, and pins. Students were excited to buy, get autographs, take pictures, and chat. I also got a picture with him. What a great guy.

Transfer Fair!

I felt this event was over all helpful for GCC students as a whole. It’s important to have short and long term goals and events like this give you an opportunity to think about your future. I am currently looking into SUNY BROCKPORT,NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, and SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY. I am leaning toward SUNY BROCKPORT because of the cost, but the other schools may have more of a long term hold for my future. My brother an RIT graduate assures me that “you have your whole life to pay off school and that the quality of education is the most important part”. He is currently in Milwaukee working as a packaging engineer at SCJ. During the summer I took four summer classes at GCC and during a weekend I took a trip to Milwaukee to see him. He is my current inspiration. I hope you enjoy the picture! Speaking of inspiration, who inspires you? Let these people in your lives drive you toward excellence.

Cafe Night

I unfortunately did not get there in time to enjoy the delicious assortment of finger food, but I did however get a wacky caricature done by a GCC Alumni, Peter Badami. This made the event much more successful because everyone loves a souvenir. This is my fifth caricature I own and I hope to add more to my collection soon. I love art in general it inspires not only my mind, but the way I dress. My first semester of college I took ART HISTORY 104, this was one of the most rewarding classes I have had the opportunity of taking.I fell in love with the work of Van Gogh with his thick brush strokes the evoked so much emotion.

Info Fair-wild west theme

I hopped around quite a bit during this event volunteering at the Student Government table and T.V. Club table. There was definitely school spirit in the air.

Dodgeball Game

I briefly attended this it looked like people were having a blast! I, however, have always been prone to injury and was afraid I would get hit by a protruding object.

Wednesday, September 15th

Fall Fest

This was a lot of fun and I hope everyone took time out of their day to take part. The food was great and the Abbott’s frozen custard hit the spot. It was hard to choose a flavor, but in the end I choose chocolate almond. There was also a live DJ.

Thursday, September 16th

Drunk Sex or Date Rape: Can you Tell the Difference?

This controversial event was mandatory for all College Village residents and all sports teams. A truly inspiring nationally known speaker Brett Sokolow ran this interactive program. The students were very responsive and willing to state their opinions.

Dinner and a Movie

I volunteered for CAB for this event. It seemed that the students were enjoying the film and the tacos! The movie was Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland. I enjoy the Disney cartoon version and I like this director, but unfortunately wasn’t about to watch the movie.

Get Involved

Thursday (Sept-17-2010) was dinner and a movie, in the student union. I volunteered with CAB (Campus Activity Board) in helping with the set up. CAB provides the majority of the social and cultural programs at GCC. They sponsor a number of activities, entertainers, lecturers, and performing artists, events and student travel programs. I try to volunteer as much as possible when I have the time. It was actually fun to be a part of it and meet new people. Everyone sat around, chatted, ate tacos, and watched “Alice in wonderland”. Oh yea Apple pie was for desert (one of my favorites).

There has been so many events going on, and working in MarCom is giving me a lot of experience in developing my Public Relations skills. I’m always walking around taking photos of people and joining in on the many events on campus. So if you see me holding a camera, don’t be surprised if I ask you for a picture. I’ve also signed up to be a part of the African-American club, our first meeting is on Tuesday, and so I’m ready to see what that’s about. I love to be involved; it gives me a sense of accomplishment and makes me feel good to know that I’m making progress.
