LOCKPORT CAVE

A couple of weeks back, a group of students went to Lockport cave. A weekend getaway, sponsored by college village. The Lockport cave is a man made underground cave. At first we were giving a walking tour and a little bit of history about the outside of the cave.  Then we went inside and got more history about the cave, as we walked through this pitch-dark tunnel. I loved the excitement. A few people were afraid, but I was up for the ride. After, we took an underground boat ride inside the cave. This was very interesting and we had a lot of fun. I would recommend that if you haven’t gone, you should at least take a trip there on your free time.

The Lockport cave is located in, Downtown Lockport, NY at 2 Pine Street in the “Old City Hall.”

Hey it’s Kiley. I would just like to share that I enjoy blogging in the late afternoon. This is after class or work when my day and the day itself starts winding down.It’s not yet night and the atmosphere has a certain peaceful feeling to it. I’m trying to actively use what I learned in that Time Management workshop, but it is a daily battle.

Nature Trail Bench Dedication Ceremony

I was relieved to see that the weather was on this events side: clear skies and sun. What more could anyone ask for! This great cause was co-sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the GCC Earth Club. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and I if time allows would like to be more involved in the Earth Club. Let’s start on the refreshments imagine: fresh crisp apple cider, melt in your mouth oatmeal cookies, and an assortment of other tasty treats. There are now two part benches at the Nature Trail, so enjoy! It’s a great place to pick up motivation or inspiration for your creative escapades. I learned that their are 113 species of birds and bird boxes all around the trail. You learn something new here at GCC every day.

Time Management

There are certain types of people in the world and a people pleaser is one of them. I, myself must admit to be one of them. John McGowan, Career Center Coordinator, shared some great advice to the group of students that attended this event. One memorable statement was, “Only you can take care of you and manage your time. You cannot tend to others demands until you take care of your own.” Such simple obvious advice proved to be monumental in my life.

I encourage all students to attend these free  workshops, available here at GCC.It also gives a SDS credit for students trying to receive the Leadership Certificate.From the very beginning of the semester I had noticed little by little I was wearing myself out too thin. This program was a godsend for many students like me, who are over worked and sleep deprived.This workshop helped pinpoint “time wasters”  and develop steps to break these bad habits. Think about it look at all the distractions students are faced with today with social networking sites and other technologies on the rise. What is your time waster and are you willing to take the steps in order to achieve your semester goals?

SALSA MAGIC – Interactive Latin Dance Party!

Hey it’s Kiley, and boy do I have a story to share with you! I had the opportunity to interview two very talented people in Salsa Magic and see firsthand what all the fuss was about.Their was a sense of mystical energy in the student union on Tuesday, September 21, at 7:00pm.

Lee Smith Jr. ,the creator of the show, “If you could mix party and lessons on dancing, that’s Salsa Magic. It’s a three hour extravaganza”.

I chatted with Aguilar before the show and she shared some interesting tidbits about the show.A talented team of two Kat Aguilar and Lee Smith Jr. have been sharing the magic for about a year now.Smith had started the show 8 years ago.I personally, have been involved in theater at an early age.Dancing was never my strong suit,however. I could sense that performing was almost second nature to her. Speaking of Smith, Aguilar shared, “He has a great teaching style and hes a clown on the mic”.

An interesting concept Smith asked several students the question “What is your heritage”. This was supposed to encourage cultural diversity. I personally have Irish, German, and English roots.Now whats yours?

I had the opportunity to see some of the prep work that is taken place before the curtain goes up, metaphorically speaking.It’s a big job for not only the performers, but the CAB volunteers as well. To plan an event big or small takes time,skills, and bodies. I feel that CAB volunteers should be acknowledged for their efforts and I would like it known that they are doing a fantastic job!

Regarding the amount of student attendance, Vice President of the Student Government,Khilna Samat, said “Immense improvement from last year”.

Smith stated, ” There is no competition. This is the only Latin dance show/party in the country”

NIGHT LIFE IN THE UNION

Jared Mahone, a recording artist from Columbus Ohio, kindly performed his music for anyone that was interested in listening in the student union. It was a wonderful experience and something different to bop your head to. He also beat boxed and gave us a little bit of Michael Jackson (you cannot go wrong with that :-). Jared Mahone has been doing music for five years. His parents did music in the country, so with that Jared grew up into music. He also graduated college and performed at different schools. His uncle was a writer and inspires his music. You can call this a family business and Jared is within the third generation. He does not really categorize his music in the typical genres of music; he calls it ” Soulful Groove Funky Pop”.

After his great performance, he sold some of his shirts, CDs, stickers, and pins. Students were excited to buy, get autographs, take pictures, and chat. I also got a picture with him. What a great guy.

Transfer Fair!

I felt this event was over all helpful for GCC students as a whole. It’s important to have short and long term goals and events like this give you an opportunity to think about your future. I am currently looking into SUNY BROCKPORT,NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, and SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY. I am leaning toward SUNY BROCKPORT because of the cost, but the other schools may have more of a long term hold for my future. My brother an RIT graduate assures me that “you have your whole life to pay off school and that the quality of education is the most important part”. He is currently in Milwaukee working as a packaging engineer at SCJ. During the summer I took four summer classes at GCC and during a weekend I took a trip to Milwaukee to see him. He is my current inspiration. I hope you enjoy the picture! Speaking of inspiration, who inspires you? Let these people in your lives drive you toward excellence.

Cafe Night

I unfortunately did not get there in time to enjoy the delicious assortment of finger food, but I did however get a wacky caricature done by a GCC Alumni, Peter Badami. This made the event much more successful because everyone loves a souvenir. This is my fifth caricature I own and I hope to add more to my collection soon. I love art in general it inspires not only my mind, but the way I dress. My first semester of college I took ART HISTORY 104, this was one of the most rewarding classes I have had the opportunity of taking.I fell in love with the work of Van Gogh with his thick brush strokes the evoked so much emotion.

I hopped around quite a bit during this event volunteering at the Student Government table and T.V. Club table. There was definitely school spirit in the air.

I briefly attended this it looked like people were having a blast! I, however, have always been prone to injury and was afraid I would get hit by a protruding object.

Wednesday, September 15th

Fall Fest

This was a lot of fun and I hope everyone took time out of their day to take part. The food was great and the Abbott’s frozen custard hit the spot. It was hard to choose a flavor, but in the end I choose chocolate almond. There was also a live DJ.

Thursday, September 16th

Drunk Sex or Date Rape: Can you Tell the Difference?

This controversial event was mandatory for all College Village residents and all sports teams. A truly inspiring nationally known speaker Brett Sokolow ran this interactive program. The students were very responsive and willing to state their opinions.

Dinner and a Movie

I volunteered for CAB for this event. It seemed that the students were enjoying the film and the tacos! The movie was Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland. I enjoy the Disney cartoon version and I like this director, but unfortunately wasn’t about to watch the movie.

Hey! It’s Kiley here blogging about life here at Genesee Community College. These pictures were were from the first College Village Saturday retreat and there is a Saturday Getaway every week.This is a great release from a typical stressful week here at Genesee Community College.The number of students reached its peak for this event and proved to be a great success.I attended this event last year and looked forward to this event specifically. It’s a great way to start the year, forming new bonds and friendships! I have many fond memories of my first GCC Darien Lake trip last year.For example, I still have the caricature I bought last year as a souvenir. I feel students living on campus should take advantage of the opportunities to get off campus. The off-campus “Saturday Getaway’s” not only get you out of your element, but are free.

On Saturday, (September 11th) I went to the University at Buffalo to visit my friend, Michaela Raes, who is pursuing to get into the pharmacy program. This made me face “head on” the reality of transferring to another school and all the work that is a part of this process. It is a tad overwhelming to be honest with you, but is something every second year GCC student must face. Till next time! -Kiley-

Get Involved

Thursday (Sept-17-2010) was dinner and a movie, in the student union. I volunteered with CAB (Campus Activity Board) in helping with the set up. CAB provides the majority of the social and cultural programs at GCC. They sponsor a number of activities, entertainers, lecturers, and performing artists, events and student travel programs. I try to volunteer as much as possible when I have the time. It was actually fun to be a part of it and meet new people. Everyone sat around, chatted, ate tacos, and watched “Alice in wonderland”. Oh yea Apple pie was for desert (one of my favorites).

There has been so many events going on, and working in MarCom is giving me a lot of experience in developing my Public Relations skills. I’m always walking around taking photos of people and joining in on the many events on campus. So if you see me holding a camera, don’t be surprised if I ask you for a picture. I’ve also signed up to be a part of the African-American club, our first meeting is on Tuesday, and so I’m ready to see what that’s about. I love to be involved; it gives me a sense of accomplishment and makes me feel good to know that I’m making progress.
