twelveIt’s not to late to register for 12 week courses that start on Monday (September 22). There’s a pretty wide variety of courses open at this point:

  • BUS 110 – Personal Money Management
  • CEP 101 – Career & Educational Planning
  • CRJ 122 – Intro Emergency Management
  • FPT 101 – Intro to Food Processing Tech
  • HUR 101 – Human Relations 1 (Warsaw)
  • LIT 213 – Science Fiction (Online)
  • MUS 203 – Hist Rock & Roll: Blues & Beyond (Albion)

Of course, 12 week courses are faster paced than the full semester course, but nowhere near as fast as an 8 week class — and there are a bunch of those starting on October 20. More about those later!

This is an opportunity to talk to an adviser, especially if you’re kind of drowning in one of your courses. You can get out of that going-to-be-awful course and into something…

Zyla Adds a Pop of Color to GCC

Standard

On Wednesday September 17th, GCC had the pleasure of hosting Emmy-award-winning stylist and author, David Zyla, as a guest speaker. When he walked into the room, Zyla had this energy about him. There’s something special about having a guest speaker who is just as excited to be in attendance as the audience. David Zyla kept listeners intrigued with his relatable anecdotes and fashion-industry insights.

A very accomplished individual, it is clear that David Zyla has worked hard to achieve everything that he has earned. He is an author of two books (Color Your Style and How to Win At Shopping) and a 2010 Emmy Award recipient in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design for All My Children. Raised in New Hartford, New York, and a student of the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, Zyla has always been a man who is motivated by style. David revealed to the audience that one experience he had in particular at a young age was a defining moment in the beginnings of his fashion career. His parents had been getting ready for a dinner party, and Zyla told his mother to wear a certain necklace. He then continued to advise his father to put together a not-so-obvious outfit combination. It was this seemingly small moment in which David Zyla had discovered his aptitude for design. David pursued his interest in fashion by studying costume design at NYU. It was there that he demonstrated his natural eye for stylistic expression. However, he soon discovered that he needed to learn the reason why behind things would appear to look well together. Zyla credits a friend for what made him pursue the study of color theory stating that, “someone being completely straightforward with you can change your life.” That is exactly what happened in David Zyla’s case; from there he “fell” into his own fashion label, and his since progressed into multiple realms of the fashion industry.

Zyla went on to discuss what he knows best: color. He advised the audience by saying, “Think about color as a raw material to showcase you.” David warned against following blindly and flaunting the pantone color palettes released seasonally. Alternatively he told listeners to, “illuminate yourself with your true colors.” He taught the audience how to find their specific color combinations by observing different parts of their bodies, such as the eyes, hair, and skin. One specific color tip Zyla gave was to wear your “dramatic color” on an interview in order to leave a lasting impression. This can be found by observing the vein color on your inner wrist.

David Zyla was a charismatic and personable speaker; he took the opportunity to point out many of the audience members’ outfits and why they fit their color personas. He pointed me out in particular as well and complimented my jacket stating that it was my “essence color”. Zyla also answered a variety of questions posed by audience members and GCC students. Sophomore Fashion Merchandising student, Ariana, asked, “do you have an end-all-be-all favorite color?” Zyla responded by saying, “I can’t have color bias, I am open to all colors.” But when considering further, he stated that he loves the connotation of sunshine yellow and everything it stands for. Sophomore design student, Amber, asked David if he had any advice for students involved with the production of the 34th annual fashion show at GCC. Zyla responded by saying, “Lady Gaga performs,” the audience had a burst of intermittent laughter, “ the concept is great; for the concepts within the show find ten words to describe your theme, find a touchstone. The minute you say to yourself that I need to be more [blank] then you’re in trouble.”

Zyla offered a versatile depth of advice for both fashion students and anyone interested in the science behind color and style. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in the planning of this event, and David Zyla himself for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come speak at GCC; it was truly a colorful experience.

You can follow David on Twitter @DavidZylaStyle as well as Facebook.

One Week Down!

Reset your Genesis password AND your computer login password at the same time with the “Reset My Password” button in Genesis! MJ explains it all!

maryjane47's avatarMaryJane's Weblog

It’s finally Friday of the first week of classes… it’s been a month this week!

TiredAlthough, it’s been a relatively decent week. Couple of little things have gone bump in the night, but usually there have been more students needing help with usernames and passwords or more faculty looking for Blackboard assistance.

The “Reset My Password” button in Genesis has been a big hit, once we get anyone to use it. Using the button allows everyone to reset both their Genesis *and* their computer logins at the same time.

Faculty have made more use of Blackboard this semester. We’ve set up a lot of courses for/with folk and look forward to helping everyone use new tools down the road.

The good news is that this will be a 3-day weekend! Yay for holidays. I’ll be online watching for problems, but I will also get to sleep in, visit with some…

GCC RAKtivists’ 100 Happy Days Challenge

Standard

100 happy days (1)The GCC Random Acts of Kindness Committee has evolved into the GCC RAKtivists. They began trying to make GCC a happier and kinder place with the first annual Random Acts of Kindness Week last February and now they’re at it again. The RAKtivists are challenging GCC to be happy for 100 days in a row. The challenge is simple. Take a photo and share it with the hashtag #GCC100HappyDays every day for 100 days. You can also create your own hashtag in order to personalize your own 100 Happy Days but if you would like to share a happy day at GCC then please be sure to use our hashtag too.  This challenge stems from the original 100 Happy Days Challenge where you can register your happy days with their website and learn more about the 100 Happy Days Foundation.

The RAKtivists are welcoming new members and new ideas on how to spread the kindness around GCC. They will be meeting on the Third Tuesday of each month during common hour beginning with September 16. The location of their first meeting will be announced at a later date. Check out their Facebook page to stay up to date on meeting dates and locations. The RAKtivists plan to share the best of #GCC100HappyDays on their Facebook page on a weekly basis as well as sharing their 100 happy days. GCC and the RAKtivists will begin their #GCC100HappyDays Challenge on Wednesday, August 20, 2014.

Time to Catch Up

Check it out! Student Blogger Dani has just begun her study abroad experience in Korea!

There is so much to catch up on! By the time I get home at night, I head straight for my bed! I’ll break it up by day.

Tuesday: One of my new friends had the good fortune to be able to celebrate her birthday during her time here at KNU! Her Korean “buddy” posted a message on the group Facebook and many people from the program showed up! Once everyone was assembled we walked out the North Gate of the campus and agreed to have dinner at an Italian style restaurant of all places! The food was really good, and we made up for straying from Korean culture by migrating to a traditional Korean bar. It was so wonderful! The building was beautiful and all the tables were very low to the ground, so that you had to sit on cushions on the floor instead of chairs. Ha Young…

Aaaaaaaand….. We’re off!

Standard

I have chosen to become an online student so I can travel while getting my degree. I wrapped up a good chunk of the summer semester, and it was also my first time being an online student.

I have started my journey from New York to Texas. Currently, my border collie, Armani and I are living in a town outside of Houston for a few weeks. Its really great, the other day I went to the NASA space exploration station and watched the sun rise over the Earth from the ISS control room. Amazing.

So far, I have been doing great in my classes. I have decided to take it easy for my first semester with only three classes instead of four, that I will be doing next semester… get the feeling for things before I make the load a bit heavier. Meteorology, Career Planning, and Anthropology are the classes I’m taking. I would like to transfer into an Anthropology program after I earn my AA. Personally, I really enjoy natural sciences, so I really enjoy these classes.

Some people have a hard time with attending college online, but so far I haven’t had any problem with procrastination… but I don’t want to speak too soon! I hope that once I get traveling, I can continue my schedule I am on, but, I also get the ability to study and read my books poolside with the birdies chirping  all around me. I study, find a nice place to take a quick break, dive into the blue water, and continue studying under an oversized umbrella. Yes please! I also have the ability to sleep in, and take a nap whenever I feel tired… that is a beautiful thing in life.

I will be leaving from Texas to Utah by the end of the week with Armani. My sister lives by the famous Arches National Park in Moab, so I am making some visits before I head off to Asia. My plan is to take the two years and backpack all around Asia. Sri Lanka, The Moldives, India, perhaps Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and a few other places. The journey to the first stop, Sri Lanka will be in late July. I have been there before for a few months. I traveled around the island for a month but loved it so much, I found a job at a very funky and artsy hookah lounge/hostel/restaurant called the Pink Elephant. It was right across a very beautiful beach in the village of Unawatuna on the southwestern coast. I immediately fell in love with the lifestyle of the beach life in a 3rd world country. Obviously there are the pros and cons but for me, it is totally worth it to continue chasing the backpackers lifestyle for a few years.
