How Oral Surgery Helped Save Neissa Azor’s Life

Standard

Neissa Azor is an 8 year old girl from Haiti. She was 3 years old during the 2010 Haitian earthquake, and it was after that disaster that her mother, Fernande, noticed a little bump that had grown on the right side of her daughter’s face. The bump kept growing, and it eventually became so large, it protruded out of her mouth, displacing her upper teeth and palate, and blocking her airway.

A kind surgical technician happened to spot Neissa and her mother one day while she was going to work. She asked Fernande if she wanted help getting treatment for her daughter. She said yes. The stranger contacted many doctors she knew, and eventually found a board chairman at Baptist Hospital in Miami, FL who was willing to help.

0258 Tumor Surgery 101615 AA team of doctors, including Oral Surgeons, made models to understand how to remove the tumor and engineered Neissa’s treatment plan.

This past September Neissa received a 2 part surgery that removed the tumor, reconstructed her face, and saved her life, all for free.

It took a medical team about 12 hours to saw and chisel the tumor away, reconstruct her jaw out of rib bone and skin from the leg, and close up the incisions. Seventeen Baptist doctors were involved with her care, along with nurses and many others.” Christina Veiga, Miami Herald,  http://www.miamiherald.com/news/health-care/article39313206.html#storylink=cpy

After Neissa was given time to heal from the surgery she was presented during a press conference. She said, “Thank you! God Bless you!”, and Her mother said that Neissa is going to be a maxillofacial surgeon one day, so that she can give back.

I think this story is amazing. Not only am I awed by what modern surgery can do, I am also inspired by the giving spirit of everyone who helped this victorious event take place.

Adventures in Sales: Part 3

Standard

Monday October 26th, three other students and I had the opportunity to attend the Buffalo Niagara Sales & Marketing Executives Student Day. Kourtney Shearer, Danielle Board, Taylor Tracy, and myself attended a day long conference, which included a choice of one of three tours, a special presentation by Bill Knoche, a networking opportunity, and a dinner presentation with Marc Adler. As I previously stated in my last blog post, I have decided to split the blog post into three separate posts and this is the third part in the three part series.

After our soft skills seminar with Bill Knoche, there was networking for an hour followed by dinner and a presentation, by Marc Adler. Each student who attended was paired up with a member from Buffalo Niagara Sales & Marketing Executives. I had the great opportunity of being paired up with Joseph P. Lojacono. Mr. Lojacono is the President of Valmark Associates, a Marketing Consultancy Agency, and he was also a former President of BNSME. Mr. Lojacono guided me around one of the banquet rooms at the Hyatt Regency, introducing me to the members of BNSME.

I had the immense pleasure of meeting just a few of the many BNSME members including Eva Balazs, Anthony Blasting, a financial advisor for Northwestern Mutual;, and Tim Finney, a Human Resources Advisor. The diversity of members there was astounding to me and these are just a few of the amazing individuals I had the pleasure of meeting. Mr. Finney gave some fabulous advice about taking the opportunities you are given. He had said that everyone at those gatherings could be doing something else, like being home with their family or meeting with a client, but they choose to give up their time and come to the meetings. They come to the meetings to network, get to know people, and have a fun time interacting and learning. The point he was making was that if you are sacrificing your time to go to these meetings and events then make the most of it by interacting and not being a wallflower. The advice Mr. Finney gave can be applied to not just selling, but to life. Every opportunity we get, we must take advantage of that opportunity and use it to the best of our abilities because we never know how that opportunity could impact us in the future.

In talking about opportunities, Marc Adler, the special guest speaker of the evening, touched on opportunities in his delightful presentation. Mr. Adler’s presentation was called Why Not Marketing? The presentation showcased how we all are marketers trying to communicate some type of message. We are all our own little market and marketing surrounds us all. There are three questions we must ask ourselves in order to be successful in marketing:

  1. What do we want and what goals do we want to achieve?
  2. Who are you going to target?
  3. How do you distinguish yourself from others and how you communicate those ideas?

Each of these questions, are influential to your success if you properly understand them. We all have goals, but we just need to define what those goals are. Once a week you should make it a goal of yours to open the lines of communication with someone you are trying to target. Be different and standout by honing in on the things that make you different. You can find out what those things are by sitting down and finding out what skills you have and how you try to prove it. Tell your story in an engaging way. If you are hardworking then don’t just say you are hardworking show how you’ve been hardworking in the past through examples.

Mr. Adler’s presentation was filled with anecdotes and it was a pure joy to listen to. There are five different points in the presentation that I loved and they were:

  • Follow up- call and send a thank you note. He really emphasized this point!
  • It’s all about the experiences you go through.
  • Always strive to build a greater you.
  • Exhibit the desire and energy to learn.
  • BE PASSIONATE!

The Buffalo Niagara Sales & Marketing Executive Student Day was filled with the passion Mr. Adler was talking about. Everyone I met who was a part of BNSME was passionate about their career and they were passionate about the organization they were a part of. Being passionate about the organization and their careers just made such an amazing opportunity that much better. Buffalo Niagara Sales & Marketing Executive is a great organization that really does supplement the learning we are acquiring in the classroom. It is an incredible opportunity for students, professors, and anyone in sales or marketing should consider taking advantage of these spectacular monthly networking and learning opportunities.

I would like to say a thank you to Francine Brooks, FB Displays & Design, Bill Knoche, Marc Adler, Joseph P. Lojacono, and all of the BNSME Executives for this amazing opportunity. It was a privilege to attend Student Day! I would also like to say thank you to Professor Dudkowski for allowing myself and the three other students the privilege of attending the joyous sales and marketing day!

Display Class: Round One!

Standard

Round one of my display class is over, and all of the groups did absolutely amazing! It was a lot of students’ first foray into the wonderful world of visual display, and everyone really brought their A game. There are four different display mediums to work with over the course, of the course: a rack, a window, a display case, and a shadowbox. My group selected the rack as our first project to attack, and honestly I now feel that after tackling that, the rest will be A LOT easier! It’s just such a limited area to work with, but we really enjoyed the challenge, and I think it turned out great!

imageOne of my favorite musical groups as “mannequins” in a display…. I couldn’t resist!!imageHere’s our display! The theme was “A Garden of Light.”imageAnd here’s my superstar group! Go Team!imageThis window display was absolutely stunning, and featured a gorgeous Wiccan Triple Moon tapestry!!image
The group with the display case created a charming Autumn theme to showcase some lovely jewelry.image  And last, but certainly not least, one group constructed a Dia de los Muertos shadowbox display!

Complete with twinkling lights, and hanging skulls! Loved it!image

I’m so excited to see the next round of work, from some incredibly talented people! I have no idea what kind of display my group will be working on next, but I say BRING IT ON!

Adventures in Sales: Part 2

This past Monday, three other students and I had the opportunity to attend the Buffalo Niagara Sales & Marketing Executives Student Day. Kourtney Shearer, Danielle Board, Taylor Tracy, and myself attended a day long conference, which included a choice of one of three tours, a special presentation by Bill Knoche, a networking opportunity, and a dinner presentation with Marc Adler. As I previously stated in my last blog post, I have decided to split the blog post into three separate posts and this is the second part in the three part series.

After our tour at  FB Displays & Designs, Inc., we traveled to the Hyatt Regency in Buffalo to take part in our late afternoon and evening activities. Our late afternoon plans was a special presentation by Bill Knoche. Mr. Knoche’s presentation was on soft skills. Soft skills are personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people. Communication was the soft skill that Bill’s presentation focused on. The presentation was insightful and offered many useful tips to be the best salesperson you can be.

Growing up your experiences effect your soft skills, most specifically your communication skills and here are some useful tips about how to build your soft skills that we learned from Bill’s presentation:

  • Sales presentations tend to be one sided and that is why communicating with the customer is very important.
  • Start to understand your buyer in order to build a relationship.
  • Conversation is key.
  • Life is little pieces of selling.
  • Breakdown walls.
  • Engage people.
  • Understand people.
  • Understand the question.
  • Understand the process.
  • Stretch the truth.
  • Give the customer opportunities.
The presentation was fabulous and filled with great pieces of information. I will say my favorite quote from the presentation was “Soft skills are just better than average communication skills.” I hope to have better than average communications skills after using these useful tips!

Happy Halloween from GCC

Standard

This week GCC had a lot of fun activities to do for students. By Wednesday, every office at college decorated their doors for Halloween. During the day on Thursday, students checked out the Halloween Book-cart, and decorated their own sugar skulls and cookies. From 8pm to midnight, there was the Annual Boo Ball at Student Union! There was food serving, music playing, and so many students with costumes!

In a Dandy Daze!

Dandy Day has come and gone, and it was superb! The lecture room was packed, and many GCC students rose to the occasion and really dressed to the nines, tens, and elevens! After weeks and weeks of anticipation it was wonderful to finally meet Rose Callahan live and in person, and I must say that her presentation skills are just as dazzling as her apparel!

How to Be a Resident Assistant

Standard

A lot of people have been asking me how they can become Resident Assistant at College Village, and since the RA hiring process is coming up, I thought I’d write a blog about it!

Step 1: ApplyIMG_1513

Fill out the RA application. It will be located in College Village’s Main Office. There are 16 – 20 questions that you have to answer about yourself. The answers to these questions are your opportunities to tell College Village who you are and why you’ve got what it takes to do the job. Be honest. Some of these questions may ask you about your weaknesses as well as your strengths. It’s okay to have weaknesses, just include how you plan to improve on them while your an RA. Include your resume and a letter of recommendation (preferably by college staff). Applications are due on November 16th.

Step 2: Go to the Interviews

IMG_1509

Once you apply, you will receive an e-mail letting you know of your group, and solo interview dates. For the group interview, come confident. Open up, have fun, and be prepared to speak your mind. It’s really not that bad. For the solo interviews remember what you wrote on your RA application. Be honest, be yourself, be consistent, take a deep breath, and again, be confident. Your being asked questions about you, answering them should not be hard. Let the interviewers see why you have potential.

Step 3: Take a Self Check

IMG_1522

Honestly ask yourself why you want to be an RA. Find out if this reason is big enough to keep you in the job when times get hard, and if it is worth the sacrifices. RAs spend a lot of time juggling school, work, and being supportive for residents. They also have to be careful about what they do socially because they represent their team and College Village.

Step 4: Do It

IMG_1514

Being an RA is one of the best, if not the best, ways to grow your leadership while your at College. It’s why I became an RA. It’s challenging, but it’s supposed to be. It’s also very fun. You develop friendships with your teammates, and with residents you come into contact with. Your will interact with people you never thought you could have. Sometimes you are put into situations where hurting people need your help, and that changes you. You learn how to put personal feelings aside, and help people you thought you didn’t like.  You get to make people feel welcome and help them get situated into the college life. There is a lot to gain from and to give to by being an RA.

I was really nervous about applying to be an RA toward end of my first semester. But I was encouraged by friends, particularly RA friends, who saw good qualities in me. Many of the people who approached me about being an RA have leadership qualities that they may or may not see in themselves. Just do it, when you get the job done, you’ll enjoy looking back at some of the things you were able to accomplish on the journey, and be surprised at how much you’ve grown.

Until next time.

Hello, I’m Lilia!

Standard

Screen Shot 2015-10-28 at 12.16.03 PM

My name is Lilia Kesterke, this is my third year at GCC. During my time here I have had the chance to experience a lot both in and outside of my program. I am double majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Event Planning. I grew up in a smaller town in Central New York close to Syracuse, N.Y. called Fulton. Fashion has also been a part of my life, My Grandfather owned his own clothing store in Fulton Called Bergan’s Clothing Store, and after that my Uncle’s took over the store renaming it Bergan Brother’s clothing store (which is currently located in Downtown Syracuse.) Of course my mom and her 4 siblings also all worked at the store, so my mom has also been very aware of all the fashion trends that go on and from a young age has tried to make me and my sisters into little fashionistas.

I choose GCC specifically for the fashion program, like most high school seniors I visited many different schools to find the one that best fit me. At the end I had it narrowed down to 3 different schools after visiting GCC many times, my first time to visit the campus, again to meet with Mr. Dudkowski (the head of the fashion program) finally I came back to watch the fashion show after that I was hooked.

I have been a part of two fashion shows since I have been here, The 33rd annual show called “Ethereal” as a co-producer with my own scene “Let them be Little” a children’s scene and the second was the 34th annual show “Fata Morgana” working with the tourism and hospitality students, planning and hosting the reception that follows the shows. Both were experiences that I will never forget, challenging at times but very rewarding when you finally see the end product come together. And both of the shows helped me to get an understanding of both sides to the industries.

Let Them Be Little

I am a part of AEG, Which is the community based sorority on campus, DECA, and Business Forums Club and now I am a part of the CEO Club. I also have a work-study job in the admissions office here and an internship with Lina LaMattina who is the director of the business department here at GCC. Part of what I am doing at my internship is to blog to all of you about different parts of the business programs that go on here at school, for some examples : I will talk about different clubs, events that we plan and host, and about the professors in the business department.

I am looking forward to a semester of sharing different parts of the business department here on campus with all of you!

This past Monday, three other students and I had the opportunity to attend the Buffalo Niagara Sales & Marketing Executives Student Day. Professor Dudkowski selected Kourtney Shearer, Danielle Board, Taylor Tracy, and myself to attend a day long conference, which included a choice of one of three tours, a special presentation by Bill Knoche, a networking opportunity, and a dinner presentation with Marc Adler. In order to do this amazing day justice, I have decided to split the blog post into three separate posts and will be sharing the rest of our amazing experience throughout the week.

Our day started off at 1:30 with a tour and the three tours we were able to select from were IIMAK, FB Display & Designs, and Rigidized Metals Corportation. IIMAK, a manufacturer of printing, imaging and marking consumable products with 1,000 employees worldwide. Headquartered in Amherst, New York, with additional manufacturing, distribution and sales operations in Belgium, Brazil and Mexico, IIMAK serves global needs for thermal transfer ribbons, direct thermal films, inkjet inks and related products.  FB Displays & Designs, Inc., is a full-service display and graphic design company. We selected FB Displays & Design and it was a fantastic decision. We met with the wonderful owner, Francine Brooks. She told us about her company and then she showed us around the office. Francine started the company in 1994 after being a stay at home mom, selling jewelry and doing aerobics classes on the side. When her daughter went off to college, Francine decided to go back to work and after a brief stint with another design company she decided to go off on her own.  Francine started off in a garage and now has a large space located in Williamsville, just outside of Buffalo, NY, where she has eight full time employees and two interns, one’s name is Zach! The company has been around for over 20 years now and has over 1000 clients.

FB Displays & Design’s goal is to help their client achieve their goals from beginning to end and in helping them achieve their goal they are responsible for:

  • Custom Displays
  • Preshow campaign
  • Lead generation strategies
  • Post show follow up
  • Booth staff training
  • Inspector repair
  • Installation/ dismantle
  • Logistics
FB 2
Francine gave us wonderful insight about what it is like to
deal with clients and work in a creative industry, such as creating displays for trade shows.  Trade shows are a great way for a brand to stand out because it is a face to face marketing event and it is important to stand out at a trade show whether it is with bright colors, lights, or technology, such as iPad kiosks. When dealing with clients, it is crucial to establish a good relationship with your clients and make sure you are doing what’s best for them. Always have a dialogue going with your client going at all times. Remember to under promise and over deliver. Francine keeps a dialogue open with her clients and over delivers resulting in a very successful business.
fb 5
The four of us had an amazing time learning about different displays that are available to companies and brands. We also got some great ideas for displays for the 35th annual GCC Fashion Show! We enjoyed Francine and her employees. Francine said she loves coming into the office because it is a fun environment and the fun environment was definitely shown on the tour. The experience at FB Displays & Design was spectacular and we want to thank Francine Brooks for the fabulous opportunity!
Here are some photos of us enjoying the displays and standing with the wonderful, Francine:

RIT Entrepreneurs Conference!

Standard

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the annual Entrepreneurs Conference at Rochester Institute of Technology (a.k.a. A really good school), by the GCC CEO Club. The conference was a full day, starting at 8 in the morning, and running until 4 p.m. Let me just say, they packed A LOT into those hours!!

image

The setup was really nice because everything was broken down into different sessions that you could choose to attend based on your own interests. I chose to attend “Curating the Successful Social Experience”, “Tiger Tank”, and “Creating a Digital Business.” In between the sessions there was a wonderful provided lunch, and a keynote speaker.

image

The special keynote speaker was Robert Latorre:  Entrepreneur, Photographer, Director, Cameraman, Visual Effects Director, Systems Architect, yeah this guy wears MANY MANY hats! Latorre is an RIT graduate, and is now the president of BIG Fish Films. He designed and built his revolutionary Big Freeze system, which skillfully produced a cutting-edge frozen effect. It looks amazing! The Big Freeze can be seen in feature films, commercials, and even on the Red Carpet! Needless to say, I was very impressed!

Robert Latorre CIASRobert Latorre ladies and gentleman!rl1An example of the amazing Big Freeze system in “action.”

Okay, now back to the food! RIT was so considerate of us non-meat eaters, and provided super yummy hummus and feta sandwiches, with sides of fruit and pasta salad! Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of the actual food, but look at the cute individual boxes the lunches came in!

imageimage

My favorite part of the whole experience had to be the Tiger Tank, based off of the show Shark Tank. On Shark Tank entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to venture capitalists to get funding. Tiger Tank was the same setup, except RIT students were the ones pitching the ideas. And there were some awesome ideas! My personal favorite pitch (and the one that WON), was a system called Shoraq. Shoraq will allow viewers of Netflix, Youtube, etc., to purchase clothing worn on their favorite TV shows, while watching the show!! I know, RIGHT?! This would be completely amazing!

shoraq1This type of service would be a real game changer. Right now all we have are websites that try to independently match clothing to what actors are wearing. Most of the time though their information is very limited, they only offer a few clothing items from a few shows, the problems go on and on….shoraq2

Just saying, if I had a million dollars, I would personally fund this project myself.

CEO Club group shot! Plus ME!
