This is a great opportunity to write on the Campus Blog. I heard I am the first international student to write for the blog, so I’d like to write from the  viewpoint of a Japanese student.

Well, finally I got to Batavia on Wednesday. This is my first visit to the US, and I was so excited to come here. Though it took about 13 hours by airplane from Japan to here, I was not tired at all. On Wednesday, the first day at GCC, I and other international students from Japan got our rooms in College Village, and then, we went shopping to Wal-Mart. I was quite surprised the price of commodities. They all are cheaper and bigger than Japan’s! So I felt it is a waste of money if I buy something in Japan. On the second day at GCC, I took my placement test in the morning. I was tired, because the test was long. This was the first time for me to take a test on a computer. Is this a common way of taking tests in the US? I registered for sessions and the classes will start next week, so I’m looking forward to starting the classes!

I’m really excited at everything I do or see at GCC. And I’m glad to be here.

Graduation Day

Standard

Today is graduation day at GCC…. I chose not to walk in graduation just because I did not want to but it still is on my mind.  Its a new step that a lot of my friends and I are about to take.  It makes me sad that some of these people that i have grown to know over the last two years, i wont see them for a while.  I wish GCC was a four year school just so we didn’t all have to leave each other.  Almost like you built a second family away from your family and friends back home.

I will admit, I will miss everyone and even walking the halls of GCC.

Largest Graduating Class?

Standard

Its being said that this years graduating class is one of the largest in Genesee CC history.  There are more than 900+ people earning their degree this school year. I think that this is a pretty awesome stat because I, myself am apart of the GCC Class of 2012, and we are going down in history of GCC.

I want to congratulate everyone else who is graduating this year and good luck with where ever you are off to next !!

Class of 2012 for life !!! haha

End Of The Year Bash

Standard

Yesterday was GCC’s end of the year bash down at College Village for the residents.  I had a lot of fun at it.  I couldn’t go last spring semester because I was sick, so I did not know what to expect.  They had so many activities for us to do.  They had a zipline, inflatables, henna tattoos, sumo wrestling, free food, and a caricature.  It is kind of sad to think that this is my last semester ever at GCC, but I know I will be back in the future to visit.

I am going to miss this school.

Leaving

Standard

By: Genevieve Scholl

Well, this is my last blog post and my last week at GCC. I am going to be transferring to Herkimer County Community College and changing my major to Paralegal. I really feel that it is where I am supposed to be, but I will never forget what I learned here. GCC is a great school to attend and the professors are very helpful. You are treated like an adult here and are respected by your peers and professors. I am going to miss this place and the experience has been incredible. I hope everyone enjoys their time here and refers the school to others.

To whomever takes my spot as blogger, I hope my past blogs help you to write about your own experiences and ideas and I hope you enjoy this job as much as I have. Remember, writing is only expressing yourself, so speak from the heart.Edgar Allan Poe once said, “They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night,” so keep dreaming even after you open your eyes.

Well, this affectionately ends my blogging career at GCC. I hope everyone enjoyed reading my posts and maybe even learned something in the process! Wish me luck as a Paralegal!

Spring Fest

Standard

Today is Spring Fest at GCC.  The lunch prices are pretty high usually but today the cafeteria hooks us up and offers us a full meal and dessert for only $1.00 ! It is during common hour.  They did this last year, and they offer a pretty good selection in food from hotdogs, hamburgers, mac salad, Abbott’s Ice Cream, and more !!

Come out to the tent behind the forum and enjoy !

Totally Duct

Standard

If you attended the Fashion show this past weekend, you probably noticed a few pieces that were made from different kinds of tape. There were dresses made of duct tape, caution tape, and more. This fashion was created by Lisa Crapsi and I have been communicating with her for the past couple of days to learn a bit more about her work.

Me: “What made you start working with Duct tape?”

Lisa: “My full time job is a steamfitter/ welder in local 22. I enjoy out of the ordinary and while at work I got inspired by all the tapes everywhere and decided that the world should see dirty construction sites in a new light.”

Me: “Wow that’s great. What tape did you use first?”

Lisa: “My first dress was gray regular duct tape, I made it for prom. And then a couple years ago I started again but with duct tape and plastic sheeting, and it’s developed in to insulation tape, electrical, the colored duct tapes, caution and danger tape, with more plastic sheeting and some tarps, I’ve used tyvek suits I got from work too.”

Me: “Wow that sounds so creative. Do you have a favorite piece and if you do you have a pic of it for the blog?”

Lisa: “I like the long caution tape one, it’s on my page, it has the black top. I love them all but that one looks really cool walking down the runway.”

Me: “Is there a fashion designer that is your role model?”

Lisa: “I love Besty Johnson’s work. her style is very unique and she as a person is just out there and love it.”

If you did not attend the fashion show and see these amazingly creative works of art, here is a little preview. For more information, check out Lisa’s Facebook page TOTALLY DUCT.

Fashion Show

Standard

This years fashion show, Soiree, was a big hit.  Being involved in it was definitely a different experience, but it was fun.  I gained a lot of new friends do to it as well.  In my opinion, my favorite scene had to be the boat scene by Michael Burton, only because the choreography at the beginning was pretty eye-catching.  The sophomore fashion majors did a great job in putting this show together and making it work. I definitely will have to try and come back in the next upcoming years to the shows since this is my last semester here.
