Who Needs More Sleep?

Standard

Sleep. Nice healthy sleep. If you’re like me, you could use more of it! According to the CDC – the Centers for Disease Control – 35% of US adults aren’t getting enough! The recommended amount of sleep per night is 7-8 hours. What happens to our bodies when we don’t get that recommended amount? I know with finals coming up, this might be good to know in the event that you find yourself awake at night, stressing over your next exam.

  1. You get sick! Losing sleep can target your body’s ability to fight off illnesses. sick
  2. Your heart pays. Getting too little sleep (less than 5 hours) and getting too much (more than 9 hours) have been shown to have a negative impact on heart health. Your chances of developing coronary heart disease or having a stroke are greatly increased with less sleep.
  3. Risk for cancer increases. Too little sleep is welcoming to different types of cancers such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and also prostate cancer.
  4. You forget stuff and can’t think properly. Even missing just one night of sleep can mess with your cognitive function. Not only can it damage your thinking, it can also make your memory impaired as well. In other words, we need adequate sleep to lock in new information and commit it to memory.
  5. You pack on the pounds! Research shows that people who don’t get enough sleep are at a larger risk for obesity.
  6. Your appearance suffers. If all of these effects don’t do it and make you want to change for the better, then perhaps this one will! Having not enough sleep can cause premature wrinkles and dark circles. It can also cause uneven skin tone.

So, with all of this information, you must be ready and willing to make a change. How – do you ask? Here is a list of things you can do to get more sleep, in case you’re having trouble.

  1. Avoid caffeine at night time and also limit yourself during the day. Caffeine is only used to help people stay awake, therefore, if consumed at night, it’ll only worsen your ability to fall asleep at a decent time.
  2. No alcohol before bed! Yes, alcohol is a downer. However, it also keeps your mind going in an opposite direction as opposed to winding down before bed.
  3. Don’t sleep in on the weekends or when you have late class. Wake up close to the same time everyday so that your body and mind get used to the schedule.
  4. Try different decaf coffees or teas to help nurture yourself into sleeping. I know that when I drink something hot or warm at night, it instantly gives me all the warm and fuzzies and makes me feel comforted and ready for bed.
  5. Try working out during the day to wear yourself out! Being tired is half the battle, after all 🙂
  6. Put books and homework away at least 30 minutes before bedtime. When you’re stuck thinking about tomorrow’s exam that’s in store, it’s probably extremely hard to get sleepy!
  7. Listen to a meditation video on Youtube! Just go to Youtube.com and type in “meditation video” in the search bar, press play, close your eyes, and do what they say. You’ll be relaxed in no time!

Now that you have these tools, you should be good to go and able to catch up on your z’s! Good luck!

CEO Club Helps to Unite The World Through Compassionate Trade

Standard

Each year GCC’s CEO Club (Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization) picks a local business to work with throughout the academic year, and this year One World Projects was chosen. This company is located right here in Batavia, NY at 56 Harvester Avenue in the renowned micro-incubator building.

The mission of One World Projects is to create worldwide economic alternatives for artisans and their families, as well as expand the reaches of ethical and fair trade to include compassionate trade. This company strongly prioritizes the welfare of their artisans. Their focus is on partnership, commitment, helping where it is needed, and ‘paying their pay’.B7987127-A6D6-4D7B-B8A4-163D5341B60F

Partnerships

The employees at One World like to consider all of their artisans to be partners, and they work with the artisans to provide educational and vocational training. The economic and social programs provided not only benefit the artisans but the entire community they live in.

Commitment

This group of community members is committed to their trading partners help establish and maintain a long-term relationship. They are also committed to addressing issues such as poverty, war, drug abuse, women’s and children’s rights, education, healthcare, environmental degradation, and promoting peace.

Helping Where It’s Needed

Each group that the One World Projects helps is unique. The trading partners individually create their organization to help the highly disadvantaged people in their communities. And sadly, many of the disadvantaged are abandoned and single women living in slums. However, through the One World Projects efforts and through fair trade, their partners are able to transform lives within their communities.

Paying Their Way

This company is not joking when they say that they prioritize their partners and try their best to give fair pay and practice fair trade. The company pays at least 50% of the cost of product orders in advance, interest-free. This provides essential finances artisans require in order to maintain production and enabling them to continue meeting their needs for the next order.

My Time at Genesee Community College

Standard

Hello everyone, I am Helmsley a current sophomore student here in GCC. I am a native of Ghana West Africa but currently live in New York City with my Dad. I lived and played Soccer in Lyon France for one year were my mom currently reside and later moved to the united states in 2011 to pursue a career as a sports agent because back home in Ghana, the ability to play soccer is a big part of the culture.

Ever Since I moved to America, I have been able to stay focused academically which ranked me as one of the top students in my grade and also my college life at Genesee Community College. My time here in GCC has also been great. I have been able to meet outstanding roommates who set an great example In the college community.

The Professors also play a big role because their able to answer any questions I might have on my project and encourage me to stay focused academically. In GCC, I have been able to collaborate with individuals from different parts of the world. Some activities we have participated in, include training with the soccer team, having fun at the student union, playing video games etc.

As I enter my second year at the college, more and more great things have been occurring, including some hours at WGCC (the college’s radio station) as a sports caster and working in the MarCom (Marketing & Communications) Office. After GCC, I plan on transferring to Indiana State University in order to gain a scholarship to Edge Hill University in England and pursue my degree in Sport Management.

Making the Change to Clean Eating

Standard

clean eatingEveryone wants to feel good; that’s no surprise. What if your fatigue and sub-par moods are being caused by the food you’re eating? Have you ever thought of the grease and fats from fast food being the cause of your discomfort? If so, I’m here to help.

Clean eating is defined as eating whole foods or “real foods” – those that are un- or minimally processed, refined, and handled, making them as close to their natural form as possible. This is important to know so that you can base your diet around clean foods. For example, instead of going to Subway to get a turkey sub with turkey that’s been processed with salt and other unnatural flavors, consider making your own sub at home from a turkey you made in the oven. It costs sway less and its super good for you!

turkey

Other ways you can make the transition are as follows; when you’re grocery shopping, stock up on fruits and vegetables! When it comes to eating them, most of us aren’t getting enough. fruits and veggies

Another way to eat clean is to eat whole grains. The cleanest whole grains are those that have been touched the least by processing. Think whole grains that look most like their just-harvested state- quinoa, wild rice, oats,… just to name a few. If you opt for cereal, look at the ingredients list! Whole grains should be the first on the list. When you swap out refined carbs (like white pasta, sugar, and white bread) for whole grains, you’ll get more fiber, anti-oxidants, and anti inflammatory phytonutrients.

Eating less meat can help your diet as well! Al the fat that’s in meat is NOT good for you and can really take a toll on your heart. Instead of getting your protein from meat, try beans, yogurt, and plant based proteins instead.

Watch out for processed foods! I’ll be the first to admit that my happiness can be found in a box of au-gratin potatoes, but I feel so guilty afterwards! All the sodium and powders they use to make it sustainable for storing for long periods of time just make it not worth putting into my body.

So there you have it folks! IF you’re concerned about how your next 50 years are going to go, take this advice, bite the bullet, and change your habits! I’ll be doing it right along with you, so this will be exciting. Good luck!

How to Travel on a Budget

Standard

Everyone wants to get out and about every now and then. There’s nothing wrong with that! Somehow, getting out of your humble home to travel and experience new things makes you feel more at home when you finally get back. Stronger social skills, feeling more at peace, and becoming more creative are all linked to people who travel. With that being said, if you have the time, do it! Go see some stuff and come back feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

If money is an issue, take my blog as a survival guide to traveling on a budget. Lodging, food, and transportation can all be calculated to make an affordable trip.

First – Place to stay…

Try www.airbnb.com to find someone who is renting out their home for the duration of your trip! It’s definitely better than staying in a hotel and cheaper too! Since it’s someone’s home, you’ll be able to use their kitchen! – which goes into my next topic.

airbnb

Food – what to eat and how

Since you’re getting to live in a home you found on Airbnb, try cooking most nights! To learn how to cook like the people of the place you’re visiting, consider taking a local cooking class to buff up your skills.

Transportation

This is a little tricky. If you’re in the US, try either renting a car, bringing your own, or taking the public transit! When I lived in Vegas, I didn’t have a car, so I used the bus. It was only $5 to ride all day! Many cities have this option, you just have to do a little research.

public transit

Shopping

When you’re out on the town shopping, I suggest buying goods from stores that you don’t have back home. The point of traveling is to see new places, so the material you accumulate should reflect the uniqueness of the place you visited.

If you’re ready to get out and about, you should! There’s no reason you can’t do something like travel. Our planet is home to all of us, so we should feel like we can visit it whenever we want!

Anyone like art?? Fugue State – Tricia Butski

Standard

Hey there! So, does anyone like art? Just FYI, there’s a fab art display at the Rosalie “Roz” Steiner Art Gallery right now until November 2nd, 2017. The art is both “alluring and grotesque” – perfect for this spooky Halloween season.

tricia

You may or may not know, but this exhibit can be viewed Monday – Friday from 10am til 2 pm. The drawings are large scale and done in charcoal. It’s called Fugue State by Tricia Butski and she uses elements of distortion and fragmentation to take on images of human beings.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, I thoroughly suggest you do so as soon as possible. You’re absolutely in for a treat… No tricks here! – unless they’re up this artist’s sleeve 🙂

Home Sweet Home

Standard

By: Kiera Dean Fashion Design Major

The Fashion program at GCC had a trip to NYC, which was me basically going home. It was great to be home and see all the city people and my family. On my first night back home me and my friend Kimberly went out to the city to take some pictures for our friends back home in Batavia. The places we went consist from Sephora, M&M world, Forever 21, H&M, and more. We helped our friends back home get a taste of New York City without them having to leave Batavia. I went out to other places in the city but I didn’t take any pictures because I started to feel like a tourist!

A Trip to Zara

Standard

By: Ashley Barclay Fashion Design Major

On the NYC trip, we had a lot of time to pass before we all had to meet up to visit the colleges, Mavi etc.. A major portion that took my time up was shopping. I tried not going to stores that were easily accessible to me back home like Lush or Express and granted I ended up gravitating to those stores and purchasing items. Recently, I’ve only started caring about what kinds of fabrics my clothing is made out of due to the wear and tear I put them through along with trying to find comfort while looking stylish so I’m not forcing myself to be kept in a scratchy, textile cell all in the name of fashion. So, I’ve been trying to scout out more stores (online) that I’ve heard sell quality and fashionable clothing. Recently, I found that many online public figures I’ve watched have done clothing hauls on Zara (men’s, women’s & kids clothing store) where they have all talked about what they liked about the style and fit, but not so much the material. I’ve been interested in their garments, but never had a store I was able to go to and physically assess the items; not a fan of shopping online for clothing. So when I found that there was a Zara on 5th, my main goal was to pay attention to the material they use for items, the prices they stick on them and the overall layout of the store to look for any kind of strategy to encourage customers to purchase items. Walking through the front doors had a large gap for people to get in and out with their business-clothing placed on the sides. As you got further towards the back of the store it got more cramped with shelves and racks with clothing surrounding the perimeter. I think the goal was to work your way around the perimeter of the store then the shelves and racks in the middle encourage you to work your way through the maze. I understand that they didn’t necessarily have the biggest space for the amount of clothing  or the fact it was based in NYC, but I wasn’t impressed how many times I bumped into someone within a span of three seconds. The front of the store was fine and had a high variety of items and styles of clothing in that area, but that high variety seemed to escalate out of control once you got to the back of the store. The prices were also moderately high depending on the item you’re interested in. For example, a heavy coat would be $80 and a crop top (depending on the amount of detail sewn in) would be $30. I would say that the outerwear, knitwear and a mix of ready-to-wear items were priced correctly as the material used for that item was soft, breathable, had stretch etc.. But there were some items like a collared shirt priced at $40 that had the texture of those $5 rompers you try on at Forever 21 that aren’t breathable, irritable to sensitive skin and hard to maneuver in. I wasn’t surprised that Zara had 1/3 of their products like this as fast fashion has been the most adopted way of keeping up with each new trend that occurs at a cheap price. I also doubt most of their customers pay that much attention to the material; I mean I used to be like that too, I wanted to look nice and thought it was worth it to be uncomfortable throughout the day as long as the price matched the style of the item. Throughout this experience, I mainly paid attention to the women’s section/floor because I was shopping for myself and more familiar with the styles. All in all, I thought Zara knew their target market, how to work their location into an advantage, displayed a high variety of styles, and had mostly quality items priced correspondingly.
