Vandalism and Its Impact

Standard

By: Genevieve Scholl

Recently, someone has found it funny over the last couple of weeks to smash eggs all over College Village and the path leading up to the school… Not only are they destroying the campus, they are wasting perfectly good food that could feed someone a meal that would otherwise miss one. It has angered me enough to write this blog, showing my concern with some of our common practices. There is a large amount of hunger in the world and wasting food only contributes to the problem, instead of helping to find a solution. With the amount of eggs that have smashed over the last couple of weeks, several people could have been fed a meal. Half of which would have probably been children whose families are otherwise just trying to make ends meet so they can have food in their bellies on a regular basis. And this isn’t just a note to the vandals on this campus, but to everyone. Think about the amount of food you probably waste and throw away daily… If you don’t plan to eat it all, don’t order it or cook it. If you cook too much food and can’t finish it in one sitting, keep leftovers for the next day. Do NOT just dispose of that edible food. I don’t know about you, but I actually feel really guilty if I waste food. Agree?
If you really want to make a difference in our world, take part in this Thursday’s Street Clean Up from 12:30 to 2:30PM (meeting at the clock tower) or Saturday’s 7th Annual Cool Kids! EcoFest where you can recycle old electronics, TVs, sneakers, books and even American flags! For more information, visit www.genesee.edu or Genesee Community College’s Facebook page. Remember, we all need to be part of the solution and not the problem.

A great opportunity for ALL AGES, if you want to be healthy and make $$$$.

If you didn’t already know, I am a Business Administration: Marketing major.

There isn’t one day that I go without hearing about how bad to find a well paying, full time  job now a days as a Business major.  My dad always asks me “What do you want to do with your Business Degree” and i simply tell him that “I Don’t Know…” well because I really don’t.

Heres an opportunity where you could change that.

One of my friends from high school who currently attend Univ. of Hawaii informed me about this business that is big on the West Coast. It’s called Vemma.  Since a majority of us are 18-24, we chose to promote the product Verve, which is a HEALTHY energy drink (similar to red bull).  What makes this business so unique is that instead of buying billboards, commercials, or any other sort of ad. Instead, they use the power of word of mouth to spread the word …. and they simply pay you for it.  This has not hit the East Coast yet, so this could potentially get big.

Watch this video, and educate yourself on this opportunity of a lifetime.  ALL AGES.  (I have personally spoken to both Alex and Brad.)

I recently got involved a a couple weeks ago, and to believe it or not, i am having some success.  No, I haven’t brought in money yet (i just started it after a week of making sure it wasn’t a scam.), but im currently working a deal with TWO NFL players. (YES NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, like the Bills.)  I mean if they sign, then this could potentially blow up, and I could make good money for the rest of my life.

The best part about it is that it falls under my major, and the way you go about it is by the power of social media and word of mouth… oh and NO boss, NO set hours.

Its kind of ironic that I am writing this entry on the same day as GCC’s Job Fair.  If I had been know about this towards the beginning of this school year,  I would have a table at that Job Fair talking about it, and allowing people to try the product.

I took Barb Shine’s Marketing class last semester. Didn’t really pay attention that much, but enough to still receive an A.  It’s crazy to see how much of the skills that I did learn from that class be put into this business in the couple weeks I have been involved.

If you are interested in joining my team, visit http://jshelttt.vemma.com/  ……  you can email me, facebook me, tweet me, text me, DO WHATEVER, and I will explain everything you need to know. This could potentially change your life.

oh and WATCH THE VIDEO THATS LOCATED UNDER MY TIE THAT SAYS PLAY MY VIDEO… that one is actually better than this one in this page… especially if you are older.

Job Fair- April 3rd

Standard

On April 3rd 2012, GCC will be holding it’s annual Spring Job Fair from 12-2 in the Forum. It will be sponsored by WBTA AM1490. There are a number of companies scheduled to attend, including The College At Brockport and Hyatt Regency Buffalo. For a full list of these companies, please see: http://www.genesee.edu/news/articles/dspArticle/3828/.

GCC Fashion Student, Shauna Scott, interviewed one of the companies scheduled to attend. She interviews Darien Lake Theme Park Resort Assistant General Manager, Christopher Thorpe who talks about the many advantages to working at Darien Lake.

A few of the things that caught my attention while watching the video interview, were as follows…

Christopher says that these things are the biggest advantages to working at the Park.

1. Resume building

2. Managing your own performance helps you to be committed to your job.

3. Learning fundamental business skills while on the job.

4. Earning personal development.

5. Free admission tickets to park with EVERY paycheck.

He also gives advice about the upcoming job fair and what the company expects.

1. “Come with an open mind.”

2. “Be professional.”

3. Dress business casual

4. “Be Yourself.”

During the course of the video, the Darien Lake ducks (ducks do not belong to Darien Lake, they simply supply the water for them to bath in 🙂 ), agreed with Christopher many times and also believe that Darien Lake Theme Park Resort is a great place. So, attend the job fair on April 3rd and discuss with Darien Lake (as well as many other companies) if you would be the perfect person for “the job”!

The Color Green

Standard

Hey everyone! Genevieve here… Wondering if you have ever realized just how prominent the color green is in our lives. I mean, think about it, green is what each living thing starts out as. Well, not in the literal sense all the time, but still. The grass starts out as green, underneath the bark of a tree is the green youth of it’s past, and we even start out as green. Of course you know that we aren’t born as some strange green alien or anything, but we start out green in the figurative sense. The word green is used to describe our insecurities and our “blank page” -if you will. We are “green” because we are amateurs at everything, including life, and we must learn what is needed to gain the other “colors” of our lives.

We even use the term “going green” to talk about recycling or finding ways to live on Earth that are friendlier and healthier for our planet.

An author I know, *clears throat*, once said that Mother Nature’s hair must be green like the grass because the color is so important to the world. After all, once upon a time even Mother didn’t know what she was doing. Once upon a time she was green, but as she learned and grew the rest of the vibrant colors came out in her world allowing her to share their beauty with us; her creations, her babies.

So, as you walk up the hill to class or when you’re driving in your car to work tomorrow take a moment to look at the bright green grass and appreciate it. And, if you’re lucky enough to have some free time while the sun is shining, grab a book (a novel, not a magazine or comic book) and sit on the cushion of the green and enjoy the second best priviledge we have as humans- the freedom to enjoy a good book.

High Heels

Standard

Today, I heard a guy ask “why do women wear high heels?” Well, given that I am wearing high heels today, I feel compelled to answer him. Women wear high heels for 1 of 5 reasons.

1: To feel taller
2: To feel powerful
3: To impress someone
4: To separate ourselves from the men
5: To make our legs look awesome!

Granted, many people find them annoying and useless, but there aare many advantages to wearing heels.

1: Built in weapon when youneed protection.
2: Always ready for an interview or photo opp.
3: You catch people’s attention.
4: Your legs get more of a workout in heels.

The best thing about a woman wearing high heels is you’ll never know the true reason for that particular woman’s decision to wear them so watch out! It is one of the many mysteries of women, so the next time you see a woman wearing heels don’t ask why, just keep the mystery alive.

Today…

Standard

It’s a beautiful day today, but Mother’s screams are echoing in the wind. Incase anyone isn’t familiar with my beliefs or understanding of te world I will explain. The Mother of which I speak is Mother Nature and she is screaming because of how messed up her schedule is. Because of the presence of humans, the world is changing and it effects the weather in positive and negative ways. It is only March 7th and it is almost 40 degrees outside. Granted, humans are not the only things to blame, but we should understand how angry we are making Mother.

Listen to her voice in the winds today. If you can give her nothing else, than give her your ear and listen to her plea. Sometimes, all someone needs is a friend who will listen…

Leap Year

Standard

Today is February 29th. Happy Leap Year everyone! I don’t know how many of you have seen the movie Leap Year starring Amy Adams…

But, if you haven’t I will explain why it is important. In the movie, Anna- the main character- goes to Ireland to propose to her boyfriend on this date. You see in Ireland there is a tradition where, on a leap year, a woman can propose to a man.

I love this tradition, because over here in America if that happened very often, it would be criticized. Here it is thought that the man always has to do the asking. Granted, it is the way we girls would prefer it, but sometimes you just have to take matters intto your own hands. I’m not saying it should always happen, but I think we’d all be a little better off if we accepted it when it did happen, without making fun of the man or something.
