Aphrodite

Standard

Aphrodite was the goddess of fertility, love, and beauty. She also represents affection, and the attraction that binds people together.  Two different stories explain the birth of Aphrodite. The first is simple: She was the child of Zeus and Dione. According to the second story, however, Aphrodite rose from the foam of the sea.  Aphrodite and her son Eros teamed up to cause Zeus to fall in love with a human named Europa.  Aphrodite loved Adonis. She saw him when he was born and determined then that he should be hers. She assigned Persephone to his care, but Persephone fell in love with Adonis also and would not give him back. Finally, Zeus had to mediate. He judged that Adonis should spend half the year with each.  Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena were the top three contenders for a gold apple marked “For the Fairest.” They asked Zeus to judge the contest, but he refused. Paris, son of the King of Troy, judged the contest instead. Each of the three goddesses promised him something in return; he chose Aphrodite as the winner of the apple. This story of the Judgment of Paris was considered to be the real reason behind the Trojan War.  During the Trojan War, Aphrodite fought on the side of Paris.  Aphrodite rescued Paris from Menelaus by enveloping him in a cloud and taking him back to Troy.

For this year’s fashion show, Aphrodite will be representing the bridal scene. This is my last semester at GCC and I knew from the beginning I wanted to do the wedding scene. I am inspired by the magical feeling that you can feel within a wedding and it truly captures the beauty and affection of such a special moment. Your wedding day is an event that you will never forget!   My vision for my scene is to have my models looking like it’s there own wedding day. I want the audience to be able to feel the connection between each “bride” and “groom”. Being the last scene of the night, I want the audience leaving with a smile on there face. I hope that it will bring back the great memories some of the guests have experienced in their wedding.  The bridal gowns being used in the scene were donated from Dalia’s Bridal and M.A Carr Bridal, both located in Buffalo, NY.

All the brides are wearing veils and flower crowns. I am hand making all of them! I had a busy spring break getting all my pieces put together.  Here is just a couple samples of my work so far.

All the males will be wearing tuxedos and I have been lucky enough to get some of them donated by Charles Men’s shop, located right here in Batavia.

I also decided I would like to feature bridesmaids, as well as the brides! The bridesmaid dresses being used have been donated from Jill Monroe, who is apart of the fashion advisory board and a fashion seamstress in Buffalo.  Also, four of the bridesmaid dresses have been created by designer, Meghan Hollister who is a high school student.

This is my first time doing a scene in this year’s fashion show and I am bettering my communication skill, teamwork techniques, and planning.  Planning an entire scene takes lots of patience and practice. Although it’s been very stressful, it’s so exciting to be able to gain the hands on experience in my career field that I love so much. I can’t wait to see the how the show turns out!

Stop Procrastinating, Start Conquering

Standard

Every student deals with procrastination, but not many people know how to deal with it. Procrastination is like having a devil on your shoulder telling you everything you could do instead of your homework. Don’t worry, I’m here to give you tips to say goodbye to that little evil man on your shoulder!

blog post (credit to waystostudy)

Stop Being a Perfectionist

Being a perfectionist myself, I understand the struggle of always wanting everything to be just right without a single flaw. However that is not always possible, and sometimes being a perfectionist can even hold you back. If you worked hard and did your best there is nothing more you can do. Don’t stay on the same paper or homework assignment correcting and checking it for the 100th time, when your time could be better utilized on something else! No one is perfect, that’s okay, just do your best.

Make Lists

I mentioned this in a previous post of mine, “How to Stay Organized Without Losing Your Mind”, but it really does help in so many different aspects of your life. It’s a method I swear by. In short just have a notebook or to-do list pad dedicated to making lists of everything you want to do within the day. This will work as a motivator constantly reminding you of what you need and want to do in the day, and the idea of being able to check everything off will push you to be more productive. Try it out for yourself, and I bet you will get more done in the day.

The 20-10 Method

This is a great method I learned about through Pinterest ,  (Shameless promo: Check out the GCC Pinterest for tons of inspiration!) The idea behind this method is to have a timer whether it be on your phone, an app you download, or there are even some webpages meant for this method. When you’re doing your work start the timer with 20 minutes on the clock, work for 20 minutes straight without interruption. When the timer goes off give yourself 10 minutes to relax and check your phone. Then go back to 20 minutes of working. Continue the loop until you get all of your tasks done! This is a great way to work instead of trying to do everything in one sitting and getting frustrated and exhausted.

Work When You’re Feeling Productive

This may sound simple but many people don’t do it! Whenever you feel productive, get down to work! Often people say ‘I’ll do my homework at this time’, but when that time rolls around they don’t feel like doing what they planned or they get distracted. So when you feel full of energy, and you’re looking for something to do, why not get some work done.

Do Your Favorites/Least Favorites First

This is a great way to snowball your productivity. Take your homework list and do the assignments you like the most (or in some cases make you the least miserable) and do that first. I would even recommend ranking your tasks from #1 to whatever, and go in that order. Doing your preferred tasks first will get you motivated, and you will be more likely to continue working. But you may prefer to do the least favorite things first, that way what you dislike or maybe your hardest course is out of the way, and the rest of your assignments won’t seem as bad. Either way, just have to figure out what works best for you.

You’ll always have those days where you’d rather do anything other than your responsibilities. Whenever you’re in a slump, apply these tips and let me know if you were more productive and if I helped you out. I love to hear feedback!

“Work hard in silence, let success be your noise.”

Spring Dreams

Standard

Imagine pajama day every day. Spring 2017 fashion is evolving with an atomic twist turning your night time attire into day time fashion. Are bathrobes the new trench coat? Take less time getting ready to go when you can leave in your bathrobe.  These new fashionable robes are being put to the test and mixed and matched with some of your fashion favs. The oversized house coat can be dressed up or dressed down and there are multiple styles such as plaid and solid colors. When wearing less  becomes more and your favorite pj’s become an important factor in your wardrobe that’s when spring dreams are born.  Turning the classic sleep gear into your runway coat is only the beginning of a new tradition.

This fast pace lifestyle calls for a change in how to get ready. When wearing your inside clothing outside was never the thing to do it has become more convenient  and fashion friendly.  The trend to wear pajama like clothing outside would only result in the creation of the daytime bathrobe. Making dress up more fun and comfortable with this “evening” approach. The  night will forever be young.

Inspiration | Apollo

Standard

In Greek mythology, Apollo has been recognized as a god of music, sun, and light. The music is the big inspiration for me to draw a design and make clothing. In the mean time, I listen to music that inspired me. My favorite category of music is Rock and Roll. I like to listen to the Rolling Stones, The Beatles etc. I also love 70’s and 80’s fashion; these eras express the freedom, culture, and empowerment which are the huge inspirations for me. My favorite designer who inspired me is Hedi Slimane. Hedi is the former creative director for Saint Laurent. He changed my life. He made me want to design both male and female clothes. He taught me the power, sophistication, and beauty of a woman. I tend to wear black and dark colors, and skinny styles because of Saint Laurent. Also, he is inspired from rock as well. I really appreciate that he has helped me to develop my idea and imagination. The other guy is Hiroshi Fujiwara, known as a godfather of Ura-Harajuku fashion and is a globally influential street wear designer, including being the pioneer for Nike’s “HTM” line, and the “Fenom” line for Levi’s. He launched his first brand, Good Enough, POOL, and The Parking GINZA. He is a motivation as a Japanese student studying in the United States.

In the fashion show, I will combine both the rock element and Greek mythology. It’s going to be really tough, because I have never done anything like this before. Creating apparel like this will be a good experience, and will connect to my career in the future. Furthermore, I want to acquire knowledge and skill through this show where I hope it builds experience in the fashion industry. I’m really thankful to be participating in the show, because this is my second time. I am going to do my best, and keep going for my dreams.

Simple Recipes for Busy College Students

Standard

Eating is something everyone has in common. We all need to do it, so why not make it as simple as possible for those who have busy schedules? Whether you’re strapped for cash, or have tons of homework to complete, you still deserve a good meal at the end of the day. We should enjoy eating. After all, food is said to be a great pleasure all around the world. Let’s bring some of that to your table.

This first recipe is something I created on my own. It’s great for a snack or maybe a side to a larger dish.

Bagel PizzasPizza_Bagel_kmrva6

1 Bagel

2 Tablespoons of Tomato Paste (get the kind with basil and oregano)

Salt and pepper to taste

½ cup of mozzarella cheese

8 slices of pepperoni

To make this easy dish, cut the bagel in half and lightly broil the tops (cut side up) in your oven. This will help prevent the bagel from getting soggy once you put the sauce on. After the bagel slices are lightly browned, take them out of the oven and spread the tomato paste on them. You can add salt and pepper to the paste to make it have more flavor. Once the bagels have sauce on them, sprinkle the cheese on top. Put 4 slices of pepperoni on each bagel slice, and put them in the oven on broil. Leave in the oven until the cheese is melted. Enjoy!

Crockpot Chicken Chilibuffalo-chicken-chili-1

1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast

2 cans of white beans, drained and rinsed

14.5 oz can diced tomatoes

2 cups of chicken broth

1 medium onion, chopped

3 medium carrots, chopped

1 bay leaf

¼ tsp salt

Dash of pepper

1 ½ tbsp. crushed red pepper (optional)

Place the chicken breast in the crockpot. Pour remaining ingredients over chicken. Set the crockpot on low for 7 hours. Remove chicken breasts from crock pot and shred the chicken with 2 forks. The chicken will be tender. Return the chicken to the crockpot and cook for one more hour. Keep crock pot on warm until ready to eat.

Southern Lima Beans and Ricelima beans and rice

1 bag of baby lima beans, soaked overnight

1 can of chicken broth

1 can of beef broth

1 ham hock

2 cups of rice, extra long grain

4 cups of water

Salt and pepper to taste

Pour the cans of broth into a large pot and bring to a boil. Add the ham hock and let cook for 10 minutes. Add lima beans to the boiling broth and hock. Add enough water to completely cover the beans. Set temperature to low-medium (3 or so) and let cook for two hours or until beans are tender. Keep checking to make sure liquid is covering beans. If not, add more water. There should be about an inch of broth/water mixture covering the top of the beans.

To make rice:

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt for flavor. Once water is boiling, add 2 cups of white rice. Turn down heat to low and let cook for 15 minutes. Take rice off heat and serve.

Teriyaki Chicken Stirfrystirfry1

5-7 strips of boneless skinless chicken tenderloin pieces, cut into chunks

1 cup broccoli florets

1 cup chopped carrots

1 cup frozen green beans

½ chopped red bell pepper (you can use any color, I just like how the red looks in this dish)

¼ c teriyaki sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Steam broccoli and carrots until tender. In a medium saucepan, cook chicken thoroughly. Add in green beans and bell peppers and also the teriyaki sauce. Once the bell pepper is cooked, add the carrots and broccoli. Toss so that everything is coated with teriyaki sauce. May serve over rice.

Spaghettispag

1 onion, chopped

2 cans tomato sauce

2 cans diced tomato

1 can tomato paste

1 container of fresh mushrooms, sliced (optional)

1 pound ground beef

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tbsp dried or fresh oregano

1 package angel hair pasta

In a large pot, add ground bee. Cook on high heat until thoroughly browned. Drain fat. Add back to the pot and add all the other ingredients except for the pasta. Stir well and occasionally while on low-medium heat. Cook for 2 hours or longer. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook the pasta and serve together.

Soft chicken tacoschicken-taco

2 cups shredded, cooked chicken breast

¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro

½ cup salsa

8 flour tortillas

1 cup chopped tomato

¼ cup preshredded cheddar cheese

¼ cup sour cream

Combine first three ingredients in a medium bowl, tossing well to combine. Spoon about 1/3 cupp chicken mixture onto each tortilla; microwave each taco for 30 seconds or until warm. Top each taco with 2 tbsp tomato, 1 tbsp cheese, and 1 ½ tbsp. sour cream. Fold in half.

Lemon baked chickenlemon-chicken-thigh-vert_niz7gu

1 package chicken drumsticks

1/3 cup olive oil

2 tbsp melted butter

1 lemon

Salt and pepper

Pre heat oven to 400 degrees. Prepare chicken by mixing juice of one lemon, olive oil, and melted butter in a small bowl. Lay raw chicken in a casserole dish.  Spoon lemon juice/olive oil mixture onto chicken pieces. Put into the oven. Every 15 minutes, take the dish out of the oven, gather all of the juice from the bottom and spoon it over the chicken again. Bake for 1 hour.

I hope these recipes catch your eye and you feel like making them sometime soon. I know they are really good for being able to pretty much cook themselves. What’s good about most of these is that you can get them ready and put into the oven, or on low heat, and then forget about them for an hour or two while you’re studying or taking a shower after a ball game or something. Get creative, but mostly stick to the recipe. And always cook the meat thoroughly.

Have a good Spring Break!

5 Quotes to Motivate You to Finish the Semester Strong!

Standard

GCC students we are at the 8-week mark of the spring semester, which means we are one step closer to summer vacation! I know the last weeks of any semester are the hardest because you’re looking forward to the upcoming break. Here are five inspiring quotes to remind yourself of when classes get tough and there doesn’t seem to be enough coffee in the world. (That quote is by me!)

blog post

“I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy. I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.”

-Art Williams

College isn’t easy, I think everyone knows that. It is so important to remind yourself that it may be hard right now, but in the end when you achieve your goals and get to work in a job you love, you’ll be able to say it was all worth it. I can promise you that you will be happy you went through this once the day comes that you can say you achieved your goal. (And have the reverse cash flow!)

“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it takes to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.”

-Earl Nightingale

People have this idea that millennials are not patient and growing up with technology has trained us to expect instant gratification. Let’s beat this stigma; be patient, work hard, and realize that although it feels like you’ve been in college forever that someday you’ll graduate, and this ‘pain’ is only temporary.

“The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem. Do you understand?”

-Captain Jack Sparrow

This might be cheesey since the quote came from Pirates of The Caribbean, but I liked this quote. What he meant by this is that the problem isn’t the problem itself, it’s your attitude while trying to solve the problem. Your attitude can either lead you to a problem or a solution. If you take on an issue with a negative attitude you  may get a negative outcome, but if you face it with optimism, positivity, and the will to work hard, you might just find the solution.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes. Including you.”

-Anne Lamott

College is stressful and there is almost never a day that you don’t have homework. I think people sometimes forget the importance of themselves when drowning in the stress of it all. It’s okay to take a break sometimes. It’s okay to take a day or even just a few hours to yourself to relax or do something you like. If you don’t find time for yourself you’ll run yourself down, stop being as productive, and your work most likely won’t be as great as it could be. So you take that nap or read that (unassigned) book, whatever you do just don’t forget to take time for yourself.

“She believed she could so she did.”

This is personally my favorite quote ever. It’s short and sweet, but has so much meaning behind it. The quote says “she”, but this goes for you too guys. If you believe that you can do whatever “it” is and you believe in yourself and your capability to reach your goals than you will. But if you can’t even believe in yourself, how do you expect for your dreams to become a reality. It all starts with you, and believing in your strengths and your possibilities. If you believe you can, than you will.

I hope you’re feeling super inspired and ready to take on the world. If you liked these quotes make sure to check out the SUNY GCC Pinterest where we have a  board dedicated to quotes to keep you motivated!

Donna Rae Sutherland & Her GCC Journey

Standard

If you have ever had Professor Dudkowski for a class then you know what a great teacher he is, and how much he cares about his student’s success. In order to gain more knowledge from something other than our textbook and his lectures, we were given the opportunity to bring in a guest speaker. I thought this was a great idea, and enjoyed the guest speakers that had come in the past weeks, so I decided to ask my boss to come in.

donnaraeIf you don’t know Donna Rae Sutherland, she is the Associate Director of Marketing Communications here at Genesee Community College. For short we refer to this area as MarCom. Donna Rae has worked at GCC for 14 years, and has 35 years of experience in communications, within this time she has never been unemployed.

She graduated from high school in 1978, and made the bold move to San Francisco at the age of 17. Jumping forward to her being back in the Western New York area, she earned a certificate in Graphic Arts from Villa Maria College in 1983, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree from Syracuse University, specifically the Newhouse School, in 1988. During her time at Syracuse she majored in magazine journalism and minored in graphic arts.

Now some of you may still be wondering, what exactly does Donna Rae do?! She works on advertising and promotions for GCC, as well as social media, public relations, student to alumni projects, special projects for the President, and she is also involved in several committees.

During her presentation she talked extensively about how she helped develop the current GCC logo and brand. When Donna Rae first began working at GCC she knew the logo needed updating. It wasn’t appealing to the eye and there were many new online marketing outlets that demanded a new contemporary logo.

One of the first steps in making a new logo was doing in depth research to uncover the positive and negative perceptions of GCC. In a professionally conducted branding study, GCC needed to determine what 3 words the school should be most remembered by. Something that alumni could resonate with, and something others would remember when they heard or saw something about the school. The Branding Steering Committee finally concluded “Beyond Expectations” were perfect words to be GCC’s brand.

Next was to create a new logo and because this institution is commonly referred to GCC and it is affiliated with the State University of New York, they chose SUNY GCC for the new logo. It only made sense to use the name that almost everyone uses when talking about the school.

When you look at any logo you probably don’t think too much about it, but Donna Rae and the Branding Steering Committee put in a lot of time and effort for the GCC brand to be just right. To go with the idea of “Beyond Expectations,” the new logo has three major components: a warm, golden lower shape with a rounded corner which represents the caring faculty and staff; a rigid blue shape with sharp corners that represents the rigors of higher education; and the ‘white tornado’ between these two shapes which represents us, the students who are whirling off the page into future without boundaries. And what’s best is the logo works in all media—from a 12 foot wide billboard to a tweet that is 16×16 pixels!

Donna Rae and the MarCom team are just one part of the reason GCC is and will grow in the future. Like her colleagues around campus in all divisions, she is dedicated to making this school a great place, helping existing and prospective students succeed. Marketing communications is an important part of the success of Genesee Community College and I am excited to be part of the team.

Who is Mariah Paddock?

Standard

20150730_094706.jpg

Hi guys, my name is Mariah Paddock, I’m on the left in the above picture.

First off, I want to tell everyone that I absolutely love Genesee Community College. I came here Fall 2015 with my best friend Megan, who’s on the right. We have been together from the beginning and as our time at GCC is coming to a close, I am leaving a lot more than a school behind. I am definitely going to miss everything about my time at GCC along with the people who surround me here.

Making GCC my home for 2 years is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I went out on a limb by enrolling in the Fashion Merchandising program. It has been a rollercoaster of fun, but by applying myself to my school work and being dedicated to extracurricular activities I have made my 2 years at GCC very successful. GCC has brought me so many opportunities and has helped me grow immensely. I will graduate this May and will confidently transfer to Cazenovia College to continue Fashion Merchandising in the Fall.

On campus, I am a pretty busy girl. I have been writing blogs for the GCC WordPress for about a year now, and I just recently became a publisher due to my internship. I am interning for Dr. Lina LaMattina for the Creativity Conference in April. My duties are anything she asks me to do! I write plenty of blogs, and talk to all sorts of people to get the conference in order.

Do you know what GCC Plaid is? Please say yes!

Well, I am also the GCC Plaid brand sales and marketing manager and blogger. I am responsible for the sales and marketing of all college plaid products. I had to develop ad campaigns for the items and I also use social media to spread word about the products. Below, I was even on a post card to show off the GCC Plaid!

As you know I am a fashion student, above is a picture of my wonderful professor Mr. Rick Dudkowski. He has taught me EVERYTHING that I know about fashion and business and is a huge part of the person I am today. For my fashion show production class, producing a successful fashion show will determine if I earn an A for my efforts. This year I am on the finance committee with my friend Min Muchler, also in the above picture. In addition to that, I am the scene coordinator of the men’s scene. When we were on our NYC trip, we visited a company call Gitman Brother’s and crazy me asked if I could borrow shirts for the fashion show and it just so happened that they said yes! You have to A-S-K to G-E-T! (The picture below is me with guys who work at Gitman Brothers)

Another fun fact about Mariah Paddock is I love love love Chanel. She is truly my inspiration, and my main goal in life is to own a Chanel suit and hand bag.

Among all of the things that I do, I manage to have fun. I am definitely one of those “high on life” kind of people. I love every day and try to make the best out of every situation. I love to ski, make crafts, paint, be with my friend and family, I love food and coffee, i can’t live with out coffee! I am a very happy, bright and cheery person, I was voted “Most Likely to Brighten Your Day” in high school, and I guess my classmates weren’t kidding!

Well, I hope you enjoyed learning a little about me, I will close with more pictures of my life…
