Largest Graduating Class?

Standard

Its being said that this years graduating class is one of the largest in Genesee CC history.  There are more than 900+ people earning their degree this school year. I think that this is a pretty awesome stat because I, myself am apart of the GCC Class of 2012, and we are going down in history of GCC.

I want to congratulate everyone else who is graduating this year and good luck with where ever you are off to next !!

Class of 2012 for life !!! haha

A great opportunity for ALL AGES, if you want to be healthy and make $$$$.

Standard

If you didn’t already know, I am a Business Administration: Marketing major.

There isn’t one day that I go without hearing about how bad to find a well paying, full time  job now a days as a Business major.  My dad always asks me “What do you want to do with your Business Degree” and i simply tell him that “I Don’t Know…” well because I really don’t.

Heres an opportunity where you could change that.

One of my friends from high school who currently attend Univ. of Hawaii informed me about this business that is big on the West Coast. It’s called Vemma.  Since a majority of us are 18-24, we chose to promote the product Verve, which is a HEALTHY energy drink (similar to red bull).  What makes this business so unique is that instead of buying billboards, commercials, or any other sort of ad. Instead, they use the power of word of mouth to spread the word …. and they simply pay you for it.  This has not hit the East Coast yet, so this could potentially get big.

Watch this video, and educate yourself on this opportunity of a lifetime.  ALL AGES.  (I have personally spoken to both Alex and Brad.)

I recently got involved a a couple weeks ago, and to believe it or not, i am having some success.  No, I haven’t brought in money yet (i just started it after a week of making sure it wasn’t a scam.), but im currently working a deal with TWO NFL players. (YES NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, like the Bills.)  I mean if they sign, then this could potentially blow up, and I could make good money for the rest of my life.

The best part about it is that it falls under my major, and the way you go about it is by the power of social media and word of mouth… oh and NO boss, NO set hours.

Its kind of ironic that I am writing this entry on the same day as GCC’s Job Fair.  If I had been know about this towards the beginning of this school year,  I would have a table at that Job Fair talking about it, and allowing people to try the product.

I took Barb Shine’s Marketing class last semester. Didn’t really pay attention that much, but enough to still receive an A.  It’s crazy to see how much of the skills that I did learn from that class be put into this business in the couple weeks I have been involved.

If you are interested in joining my team, visit http://jshelttt.vemma.com/  ……  you can email me, facebook me, tweet me, text me, DO WHATEVER, and I will explain everything you need to know. This could potentially change your life.

oh and WATCH THE VIDEO THATS LOCATED UNDER MY TIE THAT SAYS PLAY MY VIDEO… that one is actually better than this one in this page… especially if you are older.

Online Classes

Standard

Is it me or am I the only one who likes online classes?

It seems like everyone that asks me about my schedule is shocked to see that I take so many classes online.  I am a full-time student taking five classes online and I absolutely love it.  Who honestly likes to sit in class?  When you take classes online, you have the freedom to do your work whenever it is best for you.  (you obviously have a due date to turn that assignment in)

They are not as hard as people make them sound.  Some advice that I can give you on taking online classes are:

  • If you are debating on taking a class and it is your first ever online, take ENG, HIS, or like an Art History course.  I have taken over ten courses online in multiple subjects and I find that those are the easier subjects.  Upper-level MAT, ACC, and s0me BUS courses are some of the more challenging subjects, but they are not impossible.
  • Login onto your class at least once a day.  This way, you will NEVER miss anything.
  • Learn to use your EMAIL.  E-Mail is your main way of communication with your professors, whether its your genESIS email or your actual my.genesee.edu email address.
  • Don’t be afraid to talk to your professor.  If you don’t understand something, e-mail them and 90% of the time they will help you out.  There has been times where I forgot to turn in assignments on time and I just emailed the professor and told them straight up why it was late.  Nobody’s perfect.  Sometimes they will hook you up and give you credit for it.

If you learn to incorporate a few online classes with a few in-class classes, you will realize that your schedule will be a whole lot easier.

If you have any more questions on taking classes online at GCC, visit http://www.genesee.edu/depts/dl/faq/

The Horror of Wednesday Nights

Standard

Hi everyone, Emily, here!!

As anyone who reads my blog knows, (does any read my blog?!?!) I am a huge supporter of community college (why would I be here, sitting at work, typing a blog if I wasnt?). It may be hard to be a college kid sometimes, but hey, you all know that a good education at a great price is a deal that a smart student just cant pass up. You don’t have to be in Math 091 to understand that.

So, I am going to take this opportunity to review my favorite class of this semester, in an effort to get other people excited about community college as well.

My favorite class (drum roll, please!!) is HUM 240-52, AKA, Horror in Film!!!

Now, you must understand something, I LOVE horror movies. Love them to pieces. So when I heard that there was a film class based entirely on horror films, I was psyched. This class, taught by Professor Adamson, is a unique experience that not a lot of students get to experience during their college careers.

Fear creates an interesting dynamic among peers. The first class in which we watched a movie, (Insidious was the film of choice. A disturbing film with a surprise ending that is sure to leave you scratching your head and gathering up your resolve so as to watch the movie a second time.) We all pretended to be big, bad, nothin scares us college kids who could handle anything. We sat up straight in our desks and scoffed at the fog rolling onto the screen. We were to mature for the creepy music, to in touch with ourselves to care about the foreshadowed plotline…and then came the screams.

Immediately following that scream, (I cant remember who it was, but we were all thinking it…she just ended up saying it) the mood and the attitudes of I and my fellow classmates changed for good. We no longer lied about thinking the movie was cheesy and “not scary at all.” We shifted our desks so as make it easier for others to see and be closer to friends (safety in numbers) at the same time. When someone gasped we didnt laugh, we nodded our heads. Girls unabashedly shielded their eyes from particularly disturbing bits and the boys held their heads high; bravery for the girls. It was then that we ceased to be a group of peers, thrown together and cold; and have since become a group of friends, facing fictional trials together, proud to emerge from the carnage unscathed.

I dont think that there is any other class out there that can create a feeling of camaraderie quite like ours. It is evident in the way our class discussions go after “the end” has been read and we blink into the bright, artificial light of D309. It happens the same way every time. Professor Adamson faces us and asks “Well, what did you think?” and we sit there in silence. It takes us coaxing each other into speaking and then our thoughts pour out.

We always have great discussions in that class about themes of films, characters and what they mean all jumbled together. We hardly ever disagree with what the other person says. I always end up learning something new about  a film, or director, or actor that I didnt know before.

If you get the chance, I would highly recommend taking HUM 240-52 with Professor Adamson. It is a fantastic class and I am sure that you will come out of it feeling more connected to your classmates; just as I do.

Until next time,

Emily

Kindness and Flat Out Respect

Standard

By: Genevieve Scholl

Hey readers! Just wanted to talk to you today a little about the two elements of a good life (as I like to call them).

First, comes kindness. We all know what it means to be kind, but we don’t always practice it. Kindness should be like a reflex. Be kind to others and you will get kindness right back. I know this isn’t always the case, but for the most part it works. Now, I am not going to point out names or faces or anything, but other the last few days I have experienced quite a few moments where this sort of thing just doesn’t happen. From talking during class to just not caring one little bit about others. Why? I mean, is it really so hard just to be kind to others when they deserve it. We’re adults aren’t we?

Along with kindness, comes respect. As Aretha put it, R E S P E C T! “All I’m asking, is for a little respect.” That’s all I’m asking for from everyone. Respect everyone and their wishes. Like when you are asked to stop talking in class, do it. Why do we have to be a campus that feels like high school all over again?

I know you are all probably getting sick of listening to my complaints, but I feel (as adults) that we should tell each other these things and try to make our college experience a far better and more pleasant time.

But, I am not a total prude, so here’s a cookie on me…

Sorry if you just tried to lick the screen and tasted nothing… 🙂

The Library

Standard

The other day, I was walking around the library with my friend Christina taking pictures for the contest that is being held in the library, and I just stopped at one point and closed my eyes. Have you ever really thought about what you are walking into when you walk into the library? You’re walking into the history of the world. It’s all in the books, from Christopher Columbus to Harry Potter, it’s all there just waiting for us to jump into it. So jump! Take a travel through time and read about what was going through Magellan’s mind or find out what mischieve your favorite character is getting into. Just sit down with a book one day and relax. Explore the possibilities!

Three cheers if you are in support of keeping real books and reading in the world… Say no to the Kindle and Nook!

Forensic Anthropology/ “The Bone Woman”

Standard

By: Genevieve Scholl

A while back I had planned to write a post about my Forensic Anthropology class, but had never found enough information to write a good lengthy blog that tells you all about the class in detail or about Forensic Anthropology in general. Now, I have enough information to do just that. The only Forensic Anthropology class on our campus is during Thursday nights from 6-9PM. It is taught by Guinevere Granite, the best professor ever!

Guinevere Granite

She has a masters in Forensic Science and a masters in Anthropology, so she is the tops! She is young, funny, and makes class enjoyable. But, more than all of those things, she enjoys her work and in turn we enjoy it as well. That good vibe coming off of her helps the class relax and take our time to get to understand the material. It is a respectful field and one that I hope to get into one day in my lifetime.

"Fred"

Meet “Fred”… We don’t know who he was for real, but that was the name he was granted with when the class first started working with the skeletons. He is a complex skeleton with sutures, vertebrae, carpals, tarsals, and fuses. However, he is a skeleton that has been helping us in the class since day one. We have learned every bone in the body, where they are, how to side them from left and right, and as of last night, we learned how to figure out the age of the skeleton. Skeletons can be a surprisingly good form of figuring out what happened to a person. Of course you know that bullets penetrate bone, objects can crack bone, and certain diseases can effect bone in different ways. However, bones can also help us to determine age (like I said before), race, sex, location (sometimes), and even lifestyle. Bones are a crazy and wonderful thing!

This class is teaching me a lot more than I was expecting. I thought I knew most of what I would be learning, but I was dead wrong. Haha, get it? Dead wrong… Anyway, enough with the corny puns. I hope this post has gotten you thinking, and maybe interested in the field of Forensic Anthropology.

Now, for the second part of my post. For my presentation at the end of the class, I am reading “The Bone Woman” by Clea Koff. Clea Koff is a famous Forensic Anthropologist. As the back of the book says, “In 1994, Rwanda was the scene of the first acts since World War 2 to be legally defined as genocide. Two years later, Clea Koff, a twenty-three year old forensic anthropologist, left the safe confines of a lab in Berkeley California, to serve as one of the sixteen scientists chosen by the United Nations to unearth the physical evidence of the Rwandan genocide.” That is the case she is most famous for, but the book talks about her experiences before that case and the wonderful doctors she worked with that inspired her. It is an enchanting book about the field of Forensic Anthropology and about the different aspects that anthropologists look for when they discover bones. Now, if you are not very savvy with scientific words (like sun-bleached or GSW or Maxillary), it is a little slow of a read. However, Clea defines most of the more difficult ones right in the reading. I suggest that anyone interested in this field or science in general pick up this book and read it at least once.

Clea Koff a Forensic Anthropologist

Clea is a brilliant woman and definitely someone I will remember throughout my career and strive to be like… Along with Guinevere Granite.

Teacher Communication

Standard

By: Genevieve Scholl

So, correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t the whole point of our professors giving us their emails and the school having the blackboard system is so that we can communicate with them when we have questions or concerns?

Well, since no one corrected me, I am going to assume that I am right in thinking this. So, then why do some professors refuse to answer emails? I mean, how are we supposed to know the answers to our questions unless they tell us? Yes, most of the professors have office hours, but a lot of the time they are during our other scheduled classes or when we work. How is that helpful?

And it isn’t only at GCC! There are reports of it happening at Brockport University too! I mean, seriously? I understand that the professors are busy and can’t answer right away, but within a few days would be nice. Anyway, I don’t want to get into any detail because I don’t want to slander any professors, but I just thought that I should share my rant with the rest of you.
